Job summary

Basin Electric Power Cooperative, headquartered in Bismarck, ND, seeks a Chief Auditor to lead the internal audit function and provide independent assurance across financial, operational, compliance, IT, and strategic areas. The role reports to executive leadership and the Board, and it is not a remote position.

The Chief Auditor will develop the annual audit plan, perform risk assessments, oversee SOX controls, and coach the audit team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business-related field required.
• At least 10 years of related experience in internal auditing, accounting, or finance.
• Five+ years of progressive leadership experience managing audit or risk professionals.
• Experience presenting to boards, audit committees, or executive leadership.
• CPA / CIA / CISA certification or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee Basin Electric's Internal Audit function and subsidiaries.
• Develop and execute a risk-based internal audit strategy and annual plan.
• Conduct enterprise risk assessments to identify organizational risks.
• Direct financial, operational, compliance, contractual, and technology audits.
• Evaluate internal controls, risk management, and governance processes.
• Recommend improvements to policies, procedures, controls, and practices.
• Support SOX compliance through risk assessment and control testing.
• Monitor and report on audit recommendations and corrective actions.
• Lead fraud risk assessments and related investigations.
• Assess IT, cybersecurity, and system-related risks and controls.
• Present audit results and significant findings to executive leadership and the Board.
• Lead, develop, and manage Internal Audit personnel and resources.
• Represent the organization with industry and regulatory audit groups.
