Job summary

Motional seeks a Director of Data Science in Boston to lead the strategic vision for extracting insights from vast fleet data and simulation ecosystems. You will build data-driven methodologies and models, serving as the analytical anchor across systems teams and the company, translating complex data into actionable performance metrics for vehicle launch readiness and safety decisions.

Qualifications

• 10+ years leading data science or applied AI/ML initiatives
• At least 5 years scaling data-driven programs for autonomous driving or safety-critical systems
• Master’s or PhD in a quantitative field
• Expertise in statistical analysis, density estimation, hypothesis testing, uncertainty quantification, and causal reasoning
• Proficiency with Python, SQL, and data science infra libraries; experience with sequence modeling and distributed compute

Responsibilities

• Rapid operational analytics to translate fleet data into high-impact insights for launch decisions
• Develop advanced exposure models to evaluate vehicle safety and performance across environments
• Serve as the analytical anchor for Systems and Autonomy teams (Perception, Prediction, Planning)
• Create executive artifacts, dashboards, and strategic visuals from telemetry and rapid findings
• Mentor and scale a four-person team, promoting rigorous scientific practices
