Position Description

Mechanism is seeking a Head of Acquisition to drive paid customer acquisition across multiple high-growth startups in our portfolio.

In this role, you will own both the strategy and execution of paid media programs with a strong emphasis on hands-on campaign management in Meta Ads and Google Ads. You’ll also build and lead a lean high-performing team, and develop the systems and processes required to launch companies at scale.

We are seeking a deeply analytical, humble, and coachable marketing expert who understands not just how to run ads, but why growth systems succeed. You should be fluent in auction dynamics, algorithmic optimization, creative impact on performance, and measurement methodologies.

This is not a fit for candidates whose experience is limited to managing agencies or building decks. You should be capable of rolling up your sleeves, building campaigns, running structured tests, and delivering measurable business outcomes.

You will work closely with CEOs and stakeholders to ensure campaigns align with business objectives, and you’ll collaborate cross-functionally with SEO, partnerships, lifecycle, reverse engineering, and growth operations to drive integrated growth.

The role reports directly to Mechanism’s VP of Growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own performance marketing strategy and execution for multiple portfolio companies, with deep focus on Meta Ads and Google Ads.
  • Personally manage and optimize campaigns in Meta and Google Ads - owning strategy, execution, testing, and reporting as needed to drive performance.
  • Starting as an IC (individual contributor), you’ll ramp up on the accounts and businesses quickly identifying opportunities to grow the team (~1-2 employees in the first 12 months) as the portfolio needs grow.
  • Present campaign results, strategy, and recommendations to CEOs and portfolio leadership in a clear and actionable manner.
  • Build scalable processes and systems for launching and optimizing performance programs across multiple brands and verticals.
  • Explore and test emerging channels (e.g. TikTok) and leverage AI to uplevel campaign management and creative testing workflows.
  • Develop a CRO testing framework that improves channel unit economics and drives scale.
  • Structure and analyze rigorous A/B tests to improve performance and efficiency.
  • Develop and document best practices for campaign architecture, creative strategy, bidding, targeting, and measurement.
  • Monitor daily performance and report on KPIs, providing actionable insights and recommendations to CEOs/stakeholders - you’ll be responsible for performance and reporting performance.
  • Stay current on industry trends and algorithm updates, and continuously improve our systems accordingly.
  • Foster a culture of curiosity, learning, and rigorous thinking across the growth team.

  • You have a deep understanding of why systems work - fluent in auction mechanics, auto-bidding strategies, creative economics, incrementality vs efficiency tradeoffs, and measurement methodologies.
  • You thrive in a high-velocity, outcome-oriented environment and simplify complexity to drive focus and impact.
  • You communicate clearly and effectively with CEOs and stakeholders by teaching them not just what you’re doing, but why.
  • You are humble, passionate, and collaborative and treat feedback as a gift and eager to help your teammates do the same.

What You’ll Bring
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience launching, scaling, and optimizing campaigns directly within Meta Ads Manager and Google Ads platform — not through an agency or vendor, but with direct ownership.
  • Proven ability to drive meaningful business outcomes through paid media with a track record of delivering measurable growth and profitability.
  • Experience in the platforms within the last six months while incorporating new AI tools and software to accelerate growth.
  • Full-funnel understanding with experience working in MTA solutions, P&L’s, & an understanding of building forecasting models.
  • A passion for building systems for producing high quality creatives at scale incorporating AI tools and processes alongside best in class creative testing structures.
  • Experience hiring, developing, and coaching high-performance marketing teams.
  • Deep understanding of core KPIs including ROAS, mLTV, CAC and the ability to balance efficiency with strategic business growth objectives.
  • Exposure to broader growth areas (SEO, retention, partnerships) and ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Passion for building scalable systems, structured testing, and continuous improvement.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills — tailoring your communication style to executives, peers, and team members alike.

Compensation

Our compensation packages are designed to make this your dream job for both the short and long term. Packages include:
  • Competitive base salary
  • Equity in all active portfolio companies and any launched during your tenure
  • For candidates located in New York, Washington, Colorado, California, and Illinois, the base salary range is $160,000–$200,000. Compensation may vary outside this range based on qualifications, experience, and location.
