Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Boston in Waltham is seeking a Seasonal Lifeguard Supervisor to oversee deck operations and ensure patron safety through proper rule enforcement and adherence to emergency protocols. This position runs through early September 2026 and pays $23.00 per hour.

Responsibilities include supervising lifeguards and swim lesson activities, maintaining pool chemical safety, delivering CPR/First Aid as needed, and providing coaching to staff while maintaining a clean, welcoming pool

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Prior lifeguard experience is required.
• CPR, First Aid, and O2 certifications are required.

• Coordinate and manage all lifeguard activities, including breaks and rotations.
• Coordinate and manage all swim lesson activities, directing parents and participants and supervise programs for quality and safety.
• Enforce pool rules, policies, and procedures; handle issues professionally.
• Conduct and participate in branch safety and quality drills.
• Provide staff with coaching and feedback on performance.
• Test pool chemicals to comply with state codes and regulations.
• Recognize emergencies or potential incidents and address immediately.
• Activate branch and pool EAP when needed.
• Perform assists or rescues as needed.
• Provide CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen as needed.
• Complete incident reports promptly and effectively.
• Maintain a clean and safe pool environment.
• Communicate clearly with supervisors.
• Attend required trainings; engage with members to build relationships.

Education

At least 18 years of age.

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, this position is responsible for managing the deck operations, ensuring the safety of all patrons, enforcing pool rules, and implementing the branch emergency protocols as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Essential responsibilities/principal activities:
• Coordinate and manage all lifeguard activities including lifeguard breaks and rotations.
• Coordinate and manage all swim lessons activities including directing parents and participants and supervise programs for quality and safety.
• Enforce pool rules, policies, and procedures. Handle issues as they arise in a professional manner.
• Conduct and participate in all branch safety and quality drills.
• Provide staff with coaching and feedback on their performance.
• Responsible for regularly testing pool chemicals to ensure they comply with state codes and regulations.
• Recognize emergencies or potential incidents and address them immediately.
• Know and activate the branch and pool EAP when needed.
• Perform assists or rescues as needed.
• Provide care such as, CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen as needed.
• Complete incident reports in a timely and effective manner.
• Always ensure a clean and safe pool environment.
• Maintain a clear and consistent line of communication with all supervisors.
• Attend all required monthly and yearly in-service trainings.
• Engage in active listening with members in order to build relationships, understand each individual’s goals and interests and take the initiative to assist in the achievement of those goals.
• Always maintain a professional image and manner consistent with the YMCA mission and goals.
• Other duties as assigned.

Abuse Risk Management

• Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
• Complete all required abuse prevention training.
• Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
• Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
• Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
• Ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitor high-risk locations.
• Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and respond to violations using the organization's procedures and policies.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Education and experience

• At least 18 years of age.
• Prior lifeguard experience required.

Physical demands

• Physically and verbally able to interact with members and staff.
• Must be able to scan the pool visually.
• May be required to sit or stand for extended period of time.
• At times, be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Work environment

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
• Shifts vary, but may include early mornings, nights, and weekends.
