Job summary

The Asheville Jewish Community Center is looking for a Head Lifeguard to lead the on-deck operations, supervise guards, and ensure safe pool conditions for members and guests. This role emphasizes safety, coordination of rotations, and high-quality customer service during all shifts.

Base pay is $16.00–$17.00 per hour, with schedule flexibility for full-time or part-time positions. Certifications from the American Red Cross are required, with an Instructor certification earning additional pay.

Qualifications

• American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, AED certifications are required.

Responsibilities

• Actively monitor swimmers and member activity to maintain a safe aquatic environment.
• Perform rescues and respond to emergencies when necessary.
• Enforce pool rules and safety procedures; follow all protocols.
• Provide excellent customer service to members and guests.
• Clean and organize pool facilities and equipment; assist with concessions and events.
• Manage lifeguard rotations and supervise lifeguard staff.
• Cross-train to assist at the front desk (monitor/open entrance, check in members).
• Support party and pool renters for successful experiences.

Position Summary

The Head Lifeguard serves as the on-deck leader during shifts, ensuring safe pool operations while supervising lifeguards and maintaining excellent customer service for members and guests. Head Lifeguards coordinate guard rotations, monitor daily tasks, and assist with resolving issues that arise during operations.

Primary Duties (While On the Stand)

• Actively monitor swimmer and member activity to maintain a safe aquatic environment
• Perform rescues and emergency response when necessary
• Enforce pool rules and safety procedures
• Follow all emergency, safety, and security protocols

Secondary Duties (While Off the Stand)

• Provide excellent customer service to members and guests
• Clean and organize pool facilities and equipment
• Assist with concessions and events
• Support party and pool renters to ensure successful experiences

Leadership Responsibilities

• Manages lifeguard stand rotations
• Assigns and monitors side work such as cleaning and organizing
• Tests and records pool chemicals
• Backwashes the pool
• Provides guidance and support to lifeguard staff
• Addresses member concerns and resolves issues with professionalism and excellent customer service

Additional Responsibilities

• Cross-trained to assist at the front desk :
• Monitor and open the front entrance
• Check in members

Certifications Required (base pay rate)

• American Red Cross Lifeguarding / First Aid / CPR / AED Certification

Certifications Preferred (each certification earns an additional $.50 p/hour from base pay )
