SUMMARY

Responsible for on-site supervision of the Veteran's Memorial Aquatics Center (VMAC) program set-up and daily operation. This non-benefited position is scheduled as needed based on facility programming for less than 20 hours a week.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Each applicant must successfully complete three prerequisite skills evaluations:

Prerequisite 1:

  • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
  • Maintain your position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only your legs.
  • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.

Prerequisite 2:

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.)
  • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 feet to retrieve a 10-pound brick.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, holding the brick at the surface with both hands and keeping your face out at or near the surface.
  • Place the brick on the pool edge and exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Prerequisite 3:

  • Starting in the water, surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 13 feet to retrieve a 10-pound brick (Swim goggles are not allowed.)
  • Return to the surface and swim back to the wall holding the brick with both hands.
  • Place the brick on the pool edge and exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Job Tasks Descriptions
  1. Responsible for maintaining proper deck supervision for aquatics staff, set rotations, ensure participants safety, answers inquiries regarding activities, and join guard rotation. Enforce and ensure lifeguards enforce VMAC rules and regulations.
  2. Ensure pool meets State Health code regulations by regularly checking chemicals and making adjustments as needed. Perform daily facility checks on chemicals and equipment and completes facility reports daily. Provide facility support by performing cleaning of pool, pump room and storage areas. May assist with cleaning of locker rooms, bathrooms, concessions, hallways, rooms, lifeguard office, and with snow clearance of walkways as needed.
  3. Perform set-up and take down of events and practices taking place at the VMAC to include moving of bulkheads, lane lines, timing system, computers, tables, chairs, platforms, etc.
  4. Attend staff trainings and meetings, may conduct staff training audits and drills.
  5. Coordinate and work with outside organizations, concessions workers and coaches to set up events/activities. May assist with opening and closing the facility. May assist with start-up cash for events/concessions and or close outs.
  6. Perform other job related duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Currently enrolled in High School; High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Must be a minimum of 17 years old.
  • Minimum 6 months of experience in an aquatics program, including Lifeguarding and/or Assistant Pool Manager preferred.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS
  • Criminal background check required for hire.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid Certification required.
  • American Red Cross CPR-PR/AED required.

SALARY INFORMATION

All Classified positions are paid on an hourly basis. All Newly hired classified employees are placed initially on Step 1 of the pay grade for their position. Classified employees can advance an additional 7 steps (maximum Step 8) based on their previous experience. Final hourly placement on the Classified Salary schedule is dependent on the Grade Level for the position being posted and employees' previous work experience. "Grade" refers to position or job classification and "Step" refers to the number of work experience credit or service years. See our Classified Salary Schedule for hourly rates.
