Job Description
ATHLETIC COACH (to include Cheerleading)
- Under general supervision, assist the board in the fair and just discharge of its obligation to students and staff through performance of the Head Coach role over and beyond the duties of a classroom teacher.
- Reports to the school principal and athletic director.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Catawba County Schools Board of Education and implement them by the entire staff of the sports program.
- Apply state, conference, and school regulations consistently and interpret them for staff.
- Understand the proper administrative line of command and refer all grievances through proper channels.
- Attend all required public, staff, and departmental meetings.
- Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
- Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
- Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth through clinic attendance.
- Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate staff effectiveness and assistants at season’s end.
- Maintain discipline, adjust grievances, and promote morale and cooperation.
- Assist the Athletic Director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special sport events.
- Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to facility times, coordinating with maintenance and school employees.
- Provide documentation for state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
- Suggest policy, methodological, or procedural changes to the Athletic Director.
- Provide training rules and any sport‑specific regulations to each athlete.
- Monitor student athletes’ grades and conduct.
- Presence at all practices and games, providing assistance and safeguards for participants.
- Initiate injury, medical, and emergency programs and policies.
- Submit paperwork on all disabling injuries within 24 hours to the athletic office.
- Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
- Determine discipline and due‑process procedures, and contact parents for ineligible or dropped students.
- Assist athletes in college or advanced educational selection.
- Participate in budgeting with the Athletic Director, establishing equipment specifications and staying within budgetary appropriations.
- Account for all equipment and collect fees for lost or unreturned items; issue, store, and recondition equipment and submit annual inventory.
- Mark and identify equipment before issuing or storing.
- Monitor equipment rooms and coach offices; authorize access, issuing, and requisition of equipment.
- Ensure athletes occupy authorized areas at appropriate times.
- Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games, ensuring cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
- Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.
- Instill respect for equipment and school property among players.
- Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for pre‑season meetings.
- Promote the sport within the school by recruiting athletes not participating in other sports.
- Promote the sport outside the school through media, community recreation programs, and other feasible methods.
- Prepare accurate oral or written releases to local media.
- Maintain positive public relations with media, Booster Club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
- Present information to media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal in line with Catawba County Board of Education and North Carolina code.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess strong administrative and organizational skills, thorough knowledge of Catawba County Schools athletic policy and procedure, and the North Carolina Administrative Code and Statutes. Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and the community.
Minimum Training and Experience
As applicable, meet requirements established by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the Catawba County Board of Education, and school administration. Teacher license and employment as a teacher with the Catawba County Board of Education are strongly preferred. Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport.
