Kenmore Tonawanda UFSD in Buffalo, NY is seeking a Head Custodian for the Franklin Complex. The position operates 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., 40 hours per week, with eligibility for civil service appointment and potential provisional status under Erie County rules.

The Head Custodian will supervise a small custodial staff, schedule work, and participate in cleaning and maintenance of a large school building, ensuring safety and compliance with regulations and reporting requirements.

Responsibilities

• Supervises the cleaning of classrooms and other areas in a school building; conducts inspections to ensure work is properly done.
• Assigns custodial, cleaning and maintenance personnel as required.
• Maintains necessary records, papers and reports relating to personnel, supplies, equipment and work performed.
• Opens work areas and secures areas upon completion of work.
• Assists with custodial maintenance work when required.
• Evaluates work performance of subordinate employees.

Hours: 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (8hours per day, 40 hours per week) - Core Duty Schedule

For permanent appointment, the successful candidate must hold the civil service title of Head Custodian and be eligible for transfer pursuant to Erie County Civil Service rules OR must becanvassed and reachable from an existing Erie County civil service list. If not already holding the title or on an existing list, the appointment will be provisional pending civil service examination. A provisional appointee must take the examination when offered, and be canvassed and reachable from the civil service list when issued. A noncompetitive pathway to fill this Head Custodian position may be available through the temporary NY HELPS Program. If this option is available, the successful candidate will be advised.

JOB DUTIES:

Support the Director of Facilities and the operations at the Franklin Complex.

AHead Custodian –Schools is responsible for scheduling, supervising, evaluating employees and participating in the cleaning and maintenance activities of a large school building or buildings in a suburban school district;

• Supervises the cleaning of classrooms and other areas in a school building, makes frequent inspections of areas to determine if work is properly done;
• Assigns custodial, cleaning and maintenance personnel as required;
• Makes periodic inspections of maintenance activities to see if they are being performed according to regulations;
• Supervises the operation and maintenance and may operate or perform minor maintenance work in low and high pressure steam boilers and oil burners;
• Maintains necessary records, papers and required reports relating to personnel, supplies, equipment and work performed;
• May inspect work performed by private contractors;
• Assists with custodial maintenance work when required;
• Opens work areas and secures areas upon completion of work;
• Evaluates work performance of subordinate employees.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Thorough knowledgeof commercial cleaning practices and procedures; working knowledge of the maintenance and repair practices and procedures related to buildings, its fixtures and operating equipment; working knowledge of the properties of various cleaning substances; ability to make semi-skilled plumbing, heating, electrical, carpentry and mechanical repairs; ability to operate plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems following established procedures; ability to use various cleaning equipment and products; ability to understand verbal and written instructions; ability to stand, stoop, bend and stretch for long periods of time; ability to set up and climb ladders or scaffolds; ability to supervise a small staff; thoroughness, dependability, physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A. Graduation from high school or vocational school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three years of experience in either: 1.) commercial cleaning practices, which included one year of experience which was in a supervisory capacity; or 2.) general building maintenance, which included experience in one of the following trades; Carpentry, Electrical, H.V.A.C. or Plumbing; including one year of experience which was in a supervisorycapacity;

OR

B. Seven years of experience in either: 1.) commercial cleaning practices, which included one year of experience which was in a supervisory capacity; or2.) general building maintenance,which included experience in one of the following trades; Carpentry, Electrical, H.V.A.C. or Plumbing; including one year of experience which was in a supervisory capacity;

OR

C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) or (B) above.
