Job summary

Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group in the United States seeks a Head Coach to lead the Artist Coaching team, ensure daily training quality, and drive performance improvements across acts and tableaux.

This full-time role reports to the Artistic Director and requires a strong background in Human Performance, risk management, and six years of group leadership, with fluency in English and knowledge of circus disciplines.

Qualifications

  • Degree in physical activity sciences or related theoretical/practical studies for physical activity, sports, movement and circus arts.
  • At least 6 years of group management and training planning experience; circus arts is a plus.
  • Fluent in English, written and spoken; another language is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong organizational and planning abilities.
  • Effective communication and management skills in diverse contexts.
  • Autonomy and ability to build close working relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure supervision and safety of Artists; manage Human Performance risk.
  • Partner with Performance Medicine to implement Injury Risk Reduction strategies.
  • Follow Governance & Standards set by the Director of Coaching; adhere to Coaching Handbook and Code of Conduct.
  • Create an Artist-centered environment for skill acquisition progressions and readiness assessments.
  • Enhance performance by observing and correcting acrobatic execution and developing action plans.
  • Monitor Artist progress and share information with Artist Management; collaborate on decisions.
  • Oversee content of all training and acrobatic performances; ensure safe procedures.
  • Deliver the Coaching portion of Artist evaluations and participate in professional development.

The Head Coach is a professional in the management of Human Performance. As a Head Coach you will report operationally to the show Artistic Director/Artistic Manager, and functionally to the Director of Coaching for Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group (“CDSEG”). You will ensure the safety of our Artists and manage the risk associated with Human Performance (e.g. skill acquisition and decision making, acrobatic content, use of equipment, movement techniques, longing, spotting…). You will oversee the team of Artist Coaches in the performance of their duties, while overseeing the cast of the show regarding Acro-Artistic performance. You will ensure the quality of daily training, plan performance improvement, and maintain the quality of acrobatic performances in all acts and tableaux. Key Responsibilities
  • The foremost responsibility of the Head Coach at Cirque du Soleil (“CdS”) is to ensure the supervision and safety of the Artists. Our Coaching team plays an essential role in Human Performance Risk Management.
  • Partner with Performance Medicine, forming a Human Performance team to create and implement Injury Risk Reduction strategies while supporting Artists to execute their duties.
  • Follow the Governance & Standards set by the Director of Coaching (see the Coaching Handbook and behave in accordance with our Coaching Code of Conduct).
  • Create and maintain an Artist-centered environment suitable to the learner’s Stage of Skill Acquisition, ensuring appropriate progressions are used in Artist preparation and readiness assessments.
  • Enhance and sustain overall performance by observing and correcting acrobatic execution while using a professional body of knowledge to develop plans of action.
  • Monitor and document an Artist’s progress to make informed decisions and share information with the Artist Management team while collaborating on decisions.
  • Promote the CdS Durability by Design Pillars of: Prepare, Perform and Recover. Oversee Human Performance interventions, such as: warm up, physical conditioning, workload management, recovery, rotations and training schedules.
  • Oversee the content of all training and acrobatic performances.
  • Ensure that information regarding Human Performance is communicated with Artists, Artistic Direction, Stage Management and the Human Performance team.
  • Contribute to the selection of Coaches and Artist Coaches, ensuring their integration as well as their supervision, while providing the necessary personal and professional support.
  • Hold regular meetings with the Coaching team to ensure circulation of information and to create moments for exchange, feedback, problem solving and professional development.
  • Engage in professional development and continued education opportunities.
  • Ensure required documentation and administrative tasks are met, including but not limited to: integration and reintegration plans, risk assessments, performance and action plans, Aurora notes, ATM management, Coaching/Accident/Near Miss Reports. (see the Coaching Handbook).
  • Validate integration and reintegration plans, risk assessments, performance and action plans.
  • Trigger Near Miss Report, validate accident reports and review CAPA with Health and Safety management post SIRF/Near Miss Report.
  • Initiate approval request for act changes and complete checklist for new act integration and major changes.
  • Participate in projects for the improvement and evolution of CdS practices, as requested by the Director of Coaching and Human Performance Design and Management Direction.
  • Deliver the Coaching portion of the Artist evaluations related to their performance.
  • Complete other job-related duties as requested.
Job Requirements
  • Degree in physical activity sciences or a combination of studies and experience offering both a theoretical and practical structure for the study of physical activity, sports, movement and circus arts (e.g. Level 3 certificate from the National Coaches Certification Program of the Canadian Coaches Association).
  • At least 6 years of previous experience in group management (athletes and/or coaches) and training planning (long-term development); knowledge and/or experience in circus arts/disciplines an asset.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken; knowledge of another language an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Organizational and planning skills.
  • Communication and management skills in a context of diversity.
  • Autonomy.
  • Capacity to establish and maintain close relationships.
  • Ability to deal with uncertainty and ambiguity.
