POSITION TITLE: ATHLETIC COACH

General Definition and Conditions of Work

To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, self‑confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes. The coach should continue to upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, and other professional development. The success of athletic programs strongly influences community perception; public exposure is a significant responsibility and community/parent pressure for performance is taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health. The position includes extended time, risk of injury, and due process predicaments. The coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment in unanticipated circumstances. Performance is evaluated yearly and may be renewed for the upcoming school year.

Reports To: Athletic Director and, in collaboration with high school principals, may advise and support a staff of assistant and middle school coaches.

Essential Functions / Typical Tasks

• Establish fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques for assistants; design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings.
• Train, inform staff, and encourage professional growth through clinic attendance.
• Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate assistant effectiveness at season’s end.
• Maintain discipline, address grievances, and promote morale and cooperation.
• Perform duties assigned by the athletic director or principal.
• Assist in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special sporting events.
• Prepare scheduled sport events or practices; enforce facility times and coordinate with maintenance.
• Provide documentation to fulfill state and system requirements: physical examinations, parental consent, eligibility.
• Safeguard equipment sites and maintain proper protection and storage.
• Advise on policy, method, or procedural changes.
• Participate in budgeting; establish requirements and recommend equipment guidelines.
• Accountable for all equipment, collecting costs for lost or unreturned items.
• Issue, store, and recondition equipment; submit annual inventory records.
• Mark and identify equipment before issuing or storing.
• Monitor equipment rooms and coaches’ offices; authorize access.
• Permit athletes only into authorized areas during appropriate times.
• Inspect locker rooms and facilities before and after practices/games; ensure cleanliness.
• Secure doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building.
• Instill respect for equipment and school property.
• Organize preseason meetings with parents, coaches, players, and guests.
• Promote the sport within the school, recruit new athletes, and promote externally through media and programs.
• Ensure quality, effectiveness, and validity of media releases.
• Maintain good public relations with media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
• Present information to media about schedules, tournaments, and results.

Student Responsibilities

• Serve as a mentor to promote trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
• Monitor student athlete grades and conduct.
• Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards during practices, games, and travel.
• Communicate training rules, schedules, calendars, and sport regulations to athletes and parents.
• Follow injury, medical, and emergency policies.
• Direct the SPS Trainer to complete paperwork on disabling injuries and submit within 24 hours.
• Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
• Determine discipline, enforce due process, and coordinate with parents and the Athletic Director on discipline or ineligibility.
• Assist athletes with college or advanced educational selection.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to organize and supervise an entire sports program; previous successful coaching experience in the assigned major sport; substantial knowledge of technical aspects, continuous study of new theories and procedures; serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes.

Education and Experience

Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned or major sport; demonstrated ability to instruct, motivate, and supervise student‑athletes; commitment to professional growth through clinics, observations, and consultation.
