Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site injury care and evaluation; refer to parents or medical facilities as needed.
  • Pre-practice and contest preparation – taping and modalities.
  • Coordinate with team physicians for pre-participation exams and follow-up care.
  • Perform pre-season concussion baseline assessments.
  • Develop and implement emergency plans for practice and competition.
  • Maintain documentation to meet legal standards and manage inventory within budget.
  • Supervise training facility and advise on equipment improvements.
  • Organize athletic training internship programs and event coverage.
  • Advise coaches on injury prevention, conditioning, nutrition and health habits.
  • Communicate with athletic office, nurses and parents; distribute injury reports as needed.

Head Athletic Trainer - Cranbrook Upper School

The Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for the overall prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide on-site injury care and evaluation; refer to parents and/or medical facilities as needed per stated school and athletic department policies; this includes practices and contests both home and away (where possible and recommended by injury potential).
  • Pre-practice and contest preparation – taping, modalities, etc.
  • Establish and maintain liaison with team physicians, and family physicians as needed, to provide: pre-competition physical examination and health history updates; follow up injury care to include modalities available in the training room; rehabilitation programs; safe return to participation; assistance with programs pertaining to the health and well-being of students; physician coverage of competition.
  • Perform pre-season concussion baseline assessments.
  • Develop, review and implement a comprehensive emergency plan for practice and competition sites.
  • Maintain complete documentation of all necessary records and procedures to meet legal standards
  • Maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies; prepare purchase orders for equipment and supplies within budget target.
  • Assist with the selection, fitting and maintenance of protective equipment.
  • Supervision of the athletic training facility; recommend improvements in the facility and additional athletic training equipment and modalities.
  • Organize, implement and instruct an athletic training internship program in cooperation with college and university programs and local medical facilities and programs; coordinate special event coverage as required.
  • Advise coaches on proper prevention of athletic injuries: implementation of conditioning programs (cardiovascular, overuse injuries, strength and power); nutrition and other good-health habits (hygiene, chemical awareness).
  • Develop and maintain proper communication with the athletic office, nurses, other school offices as needed, parents and coaches; to include composing and distributing to school officials an athletic injury report as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Create the schedule for and oversee the daily activities of Part-Time Assistant Athletic Trainer and Student Athletic Trainer Interns when applicable.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of experience, OR a Master’s degree and three years of experience (preferably in an independent, secondary or collegiate school environment).
  • National Athletic Trainers Association Membership
  • Certification from Board of Certification for Athletic Training
  • Athletic Trainer Licensure in the State of Michigan
  • Basic Life Support Certification
  • Computer skills which include data management, email, Microsoft Office, ability to use the school’s approved Electronic Medical Records System.
  • Ability to work within a team setting of athletic department administration, coaches, school personnel, team physicians, families, family physicians.
  • The ability to display a level of judgment and problem-solving ability required to perform the functions of this position is paramount.
  • A valid Michigan driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record is required.

The salary for this full-time position starts at $60k+ based on experience.
