Job summary

Q3 Contracting, a division of Primoris Services Corporation, is hiring Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operators and Locators to support underground natural gas pipeline projects across Des Moines/Ames, IA; Cedar Rapids, IA; Omaha, NE; Sioux Falls, SD.

You will operate HDD equipment, perform locating duties, follow safety procedures, and collaborate with crew members. CDL with tanker endorsement is preferred; union wage and overtime opportunities are offered.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of experience operating excavation equipment in the utility industry.
• Class A CDL with tanker endorsement and qualifications to operate manual-transmission commercial vehicles is preferred.
• Experience with directional drilling and underground utility construction is a plus.

What You'll Be Doing

Our HDD Operators and Locators play an important role in the safe and efficient installation of underground natural gas pipelines.

Primary Responsibilities

• Safely and effectively operate horizontal directional drilling equipment and other heavy equipment used in underground utility construction, as assigned.
• Perform locating duties to support accurate and safe drilling operations, as assigned.
• Assist with the installation of underground natural gas pipelines.
• Follow established safety procedures, utility construction standards, and project specifications.
• Read and interpret applicable standards, schematics, and construction plans.
• Work collaboratively with crew members to complete projects safely and efficiently.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support daily crew operations.

Primary Requirements

What We're Looking For

• Ability to read and interpret construction standards and schematics.
• Commitment to safety, teamwork, and quality workmanship.

Preferred Experience

• Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) experience.
• Backhoe and/or mini excavator operation.
• Construction experience in natural gas, electric, or other utility distribution systems.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience operating excavation equipment in the utility industry.
• Class A CDL with tanker endorsement and appropriate qualifications to operate manual-transmission commercial vehicles

Physical Demands & Work Environment

These positions involve physically demanding work in active outdoor construction environments.

Employees Must Be Able To

• Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Stand and walk for extended periods, including on uneven ground surfaces.
• Perform physical activities such as bending, turning, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
• Work safely in environments with elevated noise levels, changing ground conditions, and nearby slow- or fast-moving traffic.

Compensation

• Union wage
• Additional $1.00/hour for qualifying CDL drivers, subject to applicable pay provisions.
• Opportunities for overtime based on project needs.
