Job summary

Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association near Homer, Alaska, is seeking an on-site Hatchery Manager for Tutka Bay Lagoon Hatchery. You will oversee all hatchery operations, supervise staff, and ensure safe, cost-effective performance while living on CIAA housing and rotating on-call shifts.

The role requires strong fishery biology knowledge, leadership, and experience with maintenance and water quality sampling. This exempt, full-time position offers on-site housing in a remote setting.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of applied fishery biology.
  • Experience with hatchery or field operation equipment (plumbing, vehicle maintenance, basic construction).
  • Demonstrated management and organizational skills with staff supervision.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Ability to operate fishery and water quality sampling gear.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and physically lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Valid Alaska driver's license or ability to obtain soon after employment.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees all fish culture activities to ensure best practices are utilized.
  • Directs and assists in brood stock collection and spawning, egg incubation, fry rearing, marking and release.
  • Ensures that records of hatchery performance, maintenance, and water quality measurements are maintained consistently with program requirements.
  • Responsible for the monthly APDES water sampling, to ensure water quality standards.
  • Ensures all maintenance activities are conducted in a manner to provide for facility and equipment readiness.
  • Conducts safety inspections, maintains a safe working environment, and provides safety training and orientation.
  • Supervises Assistant Hatchery Manager.
  • Assists with the development of hatchery Annual Management Plan and annual hatchery and project reports.
  • Escorts visitors on hatchery tours.
