Job summary

The Sample Room in New York is seeking a Handbag Hardware CAD & Prototyping Specialist to own CAD modeling of handbag components, lead hands-on 3D printing and laser cutting support, and iterate designs in a fast-paced studio.

You will collaborate with the design team to balance aesthetics and manufacturability, maintain production-ready spec sheets, and ensure clean workflow with careful attention to detail and strong communication.

Qualifications

  • Must-have Rhino CAD modeling with clean, design-driven workflows.
  • Hands-on SLA 3D printing workflow (orientation, supports, post-processing).
  • Comfort working in a workshop environment: finishing, tool use, and organization.
  • Clear communication, reliable follow-through, and ability to own tasks end-to-end.

Responsibilities

  • Model handbag hardware components to spec using Rhino.
  • 3D Printing & finishing of hardware: print, wash, cure, post-process.
  • Create and repair print-ready meshes; select materials and orientations.
  • Design development: test functionality and iterate quickly to balance aesthetics and manufacturability.
  • Maintain shop operations: organize tools, archive samples, track consumables.

Handbag Hardware CAD & Prototyping Specialist (Rhino / 3D Printing / Laser)
Role Summary

Handbag design and development studio seeking a creative, technically skilled team member to support hardware design and development. You’ll own CAD modeling of handbag components, hands-on 3D printing and finishing, and laser cutting support. The right candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, maintains strong attention to detail, and collaborates well on a team.

Responsibilities
  • Hardware & Handbag Design Development
  • Receive and review hardware specifications, identify missing details, and provide estimated completion dates
  • Create clear, production ready spec sheets for completed models (drawings, dimensions, notes)
  • Model handbag hardware components to spec using Rhino
  • Design additional features as needed for application and functional requirements
  • Communicate clearly and early when issues or delays arise
  • 3D Printing & Finishing of Hardware
  • Create and repair print-ready meshes
  • Select print materials and orientation based on requirements; place supports for SLA printing
  • Batch, print, wash, and cure components
  • Remove supports; sand, finish, and paint prototypes as required
  • Apply hardware to panels, bags, and SLGs for fit and appearance checks per company standards
  • Design Development
  • Test functionality and make edits quickly; comfortable with multiple iterations per day
  • Balance aesthetic goals with functional demands and manufacturability
  • HW Team Operations
  • Organize and archive unused samples; create duplicates for the business portfolio as needed
  • Track and inventory consumables as used or weekly
  • Maintain clean workstations and tool organization
  • Monitor machine and tool health; flag issues early
  • Shop Operations
  • Assist with machine troubleshooting as needed
  • Develop tools, patterns, jigs, and fixtures for sample makers using available fabrication methods (3D printing, laser cutting, and woodshop tools)
  • Support business initiatives during downtime; propose improved organizational tools and workflows
  • Research 3D printing materials/technologies and propose new material applications
Qualifications
  • Must-have
    • Strong Rhino CAD modeling skills (clean, organized, design-driven modeling; revision speed matters)
    • Hands-on SLA 3D printing workflow (orientation/supports, post-processing)
    • Comfort working in a workshop environment: finishing, tool use, cleanliness/organization
    • Clear communication, reliable follow-through, and ability to own tasks end-to-end
  • Nice-to-have
    • Experience with handbag hardware, small parts, or fashion/accessory product development
    • Laser cutting experience (setup, material handling, fast iteration)
    • Familiarity with mesh prep/repair and exporting for print
