Responsibilities

  • Oversees the management of all community science efforts and events
  • Quarterly photo monitoring of restoration projects
  • Yearly input of shoreline and buffer projects into VIMS ShoreWatch App
  • Leading Bioblitz events
  • Coordinates on-the-ground maintenance events
  • Scheduling maintenance days, recruiting volunteers, ordering materials, acting as the on-the-ground point of contact
  • Develops annual monitoring report with updated images
  • Maintains Hampton Roads Urban Restoration ArcGIS StoryMap
  • Develops social media posts about monitoring and maintenance
  • Updates and maintains CBF databases
  • Acts as liaison between Urban Restoration Team and Grassroots Team
  • Assists field staff in restoration activities
  • Assists with data collection for grant deliverables

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation seeks a Hampton Roads Urban Restoration Assistant in the Advocacy and Restoration Department to be based in Virginia Beach, Virginia

THE CHESAPEAKE BAY FOUNDATION

Established in 1966, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the largest regional nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to saving the Chesapeake Bay, its rivers and streams, and the wildlife that call it home. Through our education, advocacy, litigation, and restoration efforts, we work together toward our vision of a healthy and resilient Chesapeake Bay ecosystem where people, plants, and animals thrive together.

CBF has a staff of approximately 200 employees working in offices in Annapolis, Maryland; Richmond and Virginia Beach, Virginia; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and Washington, D.C. as well as 15 field education program locations. Our staff and volunteer corps work throughout the region educating students and adults, advocating for clean water policies, restoring waterways, and litigating when necessary.

CBF's headquarters office in Annapolis, Maryland is the Philip Merrill Environmental Center, the world's first U.S. Green Build Council's LEED platinum building. In 2014, CBF opened the Brock Environmental Center- one of the world's most energy efficient, environmentally smart buildings in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
Advocacy and Restoration

CBF's Advocacy and Restoration department defends and restores the Chesapeake Bay by protecting the Bay's natural resources from pollution and other harmful activities by fighting for strong and effective laws and regulations; restoring the Bay's essential habitats and filtering mechanisms; and involving citizens in CBF's environmental efforts by recruiting, training, and incorporating them as effective partners and leaders.

CONTEXT OF THE POSITION

The Hampton Roads Urban Restoration Assistant will assist CBF staff with monitoring and maintaining regional green infrastructure projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Oversees the management of all community science efforts and events, including but not limited to:
  • Quarterly photo monitoring of all restoration projects.
  • Yearly input of all shoreline and buffer projects into VIMS ShoreWatch App.
  • Leading any Bioblitz event
Coordinates on-the-ground maintenance events. Responsibilities include:
  • Scheduling the maintenance days.
  • Recruiting volunteers
  • Ordering materials
  • Acting as the on-the-ground point of contact.
Develops and maintains community outreach tools, such as:
  • Developing an annual report of the monitoring data collected which includes updated images of the projects installed.
  • Maintaining and updating the Hampton Roads Urban Restoration ArcGIS StoryMap.
  • Developing social media posts around monitoring and maintenance efforts.
  • Updating and maintaining any CBF databases.
Additional Duties Include:
  • Acts as the liaison between the Urban Restoration Team and Grassroots Team to coordinate advocacy actions at restoration events.
  • Assists CBF staff in the field with construction on restoration activities throughout Hampton Roads.
  • Assists CBF staff on any data collection needed for QAPPs or other grant deliverables.
Requirements

This a part-time position anticipated to work approximately 20 hours per week, from approximately January 4, 2027 through June 30, 2027. Exact start and end dates are negotiable. Hours per week will range from minimal time in January and February up to 40 hours per week in the spring and summer - but not exceeding 500 hours total.
