Job description

Benefits:
  • Employee discounts
  • Opportunity for advancement
  • Training & development

School of Rock Summer Creek is hiring a high-level Guitar Instructor to develop students from beginner through advanced and prepare them for live performance. This role is for experienced musicians and educators who run structured, intentional lessons, maintain high standards, and consistently drive measurable student progress.

The Role

You will coach students to become confident, versatile guitarists by developing:

  • Guitar technique, coordination, picking, fretting, and control
  • Chords, scales, fretboard knowledge, and music theory
  • Rhythm guitar, lead guitar, and foundational soloing
  • Improvisation and stylistic fluency across rock, pop, blues, and other contemporary styles
  • Ear training, reading, repertoire, and learning songs efficiently
  • Tone, effects, and basic guitar/amp setup
  • Band skills, rehearsal preparation, and stage readiness
  • Confidence and musicianship for live performance

This is not a “just play songs” environment. We expect focused, outcome-driven instruction that builds real musicianship from first-time beginners to advanced players.

Core Responsibilities
  • Deliver high-quality, structured one-on-one guitar lessons
  • Adapt teaching approach across beginner, intermediate, and advanced students
  • Develop both rhythm and lead guitar skills appropriate to each student's goals
  • Prepare students for rehearsals, performances, and School of Rock shows
  • Set clear goals and assign weekly practice
  • Track and communicate student progress consistently
  • Collaborate with other instructors and school leadership
  • Help students develop the skills, confidence, & professionalism required to perform as part of a band
Non-Negotiables
  • On time = early (15 minutes before first lesson)
  • Same-day lesson notes, every lesson
  • Prepared, intentional lesson plans for every student
  • Professional, proactive communication with parents and staff
  • Maintain a focused, productive lesson environment
What Success Looks Like

Top instructors:

  • Show clear student progress within the first 60–90 days
  • Retain students through strong relationships and results
  • Consistently prepare students who are confident on stage
  • Develop students who can play effectively with other musicians
  • Help students build both technical ability and musical independence
  • Communicate proactively with families and leadership
Qualifications (Minimum Bar)
  • 5+ years performing and/or teaching guitar
  • Strong foundation in guitar technique, theory, rhythm, and fretboard knowledge
  • Ability to teach both rhythm and lead guitar
  • Ability to teach beginners through advanced students
  • Experience coaching rock, pop, blues, and contemporary music
  • Strong improvisation and soloing skills
  • Ability to teach chords, scales, songs, and music theory in a practical musical context
  • Proven ability to work with youth and varying skill levels
  • High level of reliability and professionalism

Preferred:

  • Multi-instrument ability (vocals, piano/keys, bass, etc.)
  • Experience performing and rehearsing in a band setting
  • Strong knowledge of guitar tone, effects, amps, and basic equipment
  • Experience preparing students for live performance
  • Formal training in music education or guitar pedagogy
Not a Fit If You:
  • Struggle with punctuality or consistency
  • “Wing” lessons without structure
  • Avoid teaching fundamentals (technique + theory)
  • Only know how to teach songs without developing broader musicianship
  • Can’t adapt to different student levels
  • Are uncomfortable teaching both rhythm and lead guitar
  • Treat teaching as a casual side gig
Why This Role Stands Out
  • Performance-based program (students perform live)
  • High standards and strong team culture
  • Opportunity to develop well-rounded, real musicians
  • Work with students across all skill levels
  • Collaborate with other professional musicians and instructors
  • Help students turn their guitar skills into real-world performance ability
