POSITION GOAL
Responsible for performing a variety of duties related to protecting students, school staff, visitors, equipment, facilities, and grounds
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide security and surveillance to school campus, and district properties.
- Provide security to school and district functions, including after-school and extra-curricular activities, as needed.
- Investigate, monitor, and report suspicious activity, including theft, vandalism, and criminal mischief to administration and when appropriate, to law enforcement.
- Communicate with school administrators, students, parents, staff, community members regarding security related concerns and issues; work cooperatively with law enforcement and district personnel.
- Respond to emergency situations, take appropriate action, and provide basic first aid services as needed.
- Observe and manage students in halls, at lunch, and during other non-classroom activities.
- Manage school access by monitoring gates and other entry points throughout the school; ensure that students possess appropriate permission when leaving campus; observe and question potentially unauthorized persons on campus.
- Build relationships with students and stakeholders and assist with character education.
- Assist administration in performing searches of students and school property.
- Respond to disturbances and security incidents according to established guidelines and procedures.
- De-escalate confrontations between students, parents, visitors, community members and others. Communicate with school administrators, students, parents, district officials/personnel, community members and others regarding security related concerns and issues.
- Assist school administration and law enforcement with threat assessment.
- Make recommendations and inform school administration, and other appropriate staff members regarding proper practices/procedures necessary to secure the safe and peaceful conduct of district and school business/activities.
- Serve as liaison to School Resource Officers.
- Serve on school safety committee and assist with student crime watch programs.
- Assist with security assessments at assigned school(s).
- Prepare incident reports.
- Assist with school safety drills under the direction of administration.
- Serve as a district representative if emergency shelters are opened, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Subject to reassignment based on the needs of the district.
- Subject to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be 21 years of age or older
• High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma or higher
• Law enforcement, security or military experience, experience and safe use of firearms or any equivalent combination.
• Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida (s 790.06 Florida Statutes) concealed weapons permit and must maintain the permit throughout employment in this position
• Must be able to pass and maintain the Volusia Sheriff Office background check and Volusia County Schools background and drug screening requirements in addition to Volusia County School policy/procedures
• Must submit to and pass subsequent random drug tests in accordance with the requirements of Florida Statute Section 112.0455 • Ability to pass a psychological evaluation
• Successful completion of initial and ongoing training provided by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office (VSO)
• Must obtain and maintain compliance with on-going training and firearm proficiency tests as identified by the VSO
• Satisfactory completion of American Red Cross First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course within one (1) year of employment
• Possess a valid Florida Driver’s License; if a holder of any other valid US state-issued Driver’s License, agree to acquire a Florida Driver’s License within thirty (30) days of employment, except in a case where accommodation is required
• Ability to pass FHCP physical prior to employment
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Knowledge of formal Law Enforcement Principles via Police Academy, Military or Private Security training program (must provide evidence of training)
- Skilled in the use of de-escalation techniques
- Skilled in firearms safety and marksmanship
- Ability to be physically and mentally prepared to respond in an emergency or potentially dangerous situation
- Ability to obtain pertinent information through observation and interviews
- Knowledge and use of time management and organizational systems
- Skilled in basic computer skills (reporting writing, email, and word processing)
- Skilled in active listening and social perceptiveness
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
- Ability to sustain focus and attention to detail for extended periods of time
