Job summary

General Motors seeks a Group Program Manager for Hardware Design Program Management in a hybrid role reporting to the office at least three times per week. Location options include Sunnyvale, CA or Warren, MI.

The role leads a team of TPMs, coordinates hardware design, development and validation, and hires engineers to scale the program. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills are essential in this fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years of program management experience in hardware engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing contract manufacturers in new hardware product development, including PCBA design release, BOM management, SMT processes, and manufacturing test implementation.
  • Strong understanding of complex hardware/software systems and familiarity with hardware design and development processes.

Job Title

Group Program Manager, Hardware Design Program Management

Location & Hybrid

Hybrid role. Report to the office at least three times per week. Location: Sunnyvale, CA or Warren, MI.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of technical program managers to support in‑house hardware designs, ensuring the team is adequately resourced for current and future workloads.
  • Hire new TPMs as necessary to support growth and enhance the overall skill level of the team.
  • Coordinate hardware design, development, and validation efforts for complex, fast‑evolving in‑house hardware systems and components.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship based on team members’ experience and skill levels.
  • Ensure inter‑team dependencies, handoffs, risks, and issues are captured, tracked, and resolved.
  • Identify and account for all business deliverables in the project plan with responsibilities and due dates.
  • Define program deliverables, metrics, and KPIs, and set up mechanisms to track and report.
  • Ensure consistent and effective communication of status and progress across program teams.
  • Conduct periodic retrospectives to continuously assess and improve processes and tools.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years managing technical program management teams and at least 10 years of program management experience in hardware engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing contract manufacturers in new hardware product development, including PCBA design release, BOM management, SMT processes, and manufacturing test implementation.
  • Strong understanding of complex hardware/software systems and familiarity with hardware design and development processes, including board‑level design, mechanical engineering, and hardware validation.
  • Strong technical and non‑technical communication skills.
  • Detail‑oriented with the ability to bring order and organization to any team.
  • Ability to handle ambiguities and work in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.
  • Requirement to legally operate a motor vehicle on a regular basis.
Preferred Skills
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in the automotive industry.
  • Experience with PCBA hardware design and design for manufacturing.
  • Proficiency with JIRA, Confluence, and Microsoft Project.
Compensation
  • Salary range: $134,700 to $245,000. Actual offer will vary based on relevant factors.
  • Bonus potential: Incentive pay program based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
