Job summary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a group leader for the Multimodal Sensor Analytics group within the ESAC section of the EEID, ESTD. The role focuses on AI/ML methods, image/signal processing, and sensor systems, guiding 8–12 researchers toward advancing AI security, computational imaging, and energy infrastructures.

The successful candidate will shape research directions, mentor staff, and foster collaborations while upholding ORNL's safety culture and core values.

Qualifications

• PhD in electrical/computer engineering, computer science, or a related discipline.
• 8+ years of experience in image/signal processing and machine learning.
• Proven track record of leading R&D teams.

Responsibilities

• Initiate, lead and perform independent R&D on an ongoing basis.
• Develop and grow programs in image/signal processing, applied machine learning, and AI for security, imaging, biometrics and energy infrastructures.
• Develop a vision and implement a cohesive group research strategy for future success.
• Assist staff in setting performance goals aligned with group strategy and career goals.
• Provide input to ESAC Section Head on staff development and guidance.
• Attract top candidates and hire staff committed to world-class R&D.
