POSITION SUMMARYInstructs group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. This position also creates a welcoming environment for all members of all backgrounds and abilities.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSLeads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes according to the class descriptions and specific program guidelines in the YMCA program manuals.Answers questions from members to provide support in achieving goals related to healthy living.Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.Maintains a positive atmosphere by demonstrating the YMCA’s 4 Core Values: Honesty, Caring, Respect, and Responsibility in all interactions with members, guests, program participants, and staff.Provides medical attention to class participants when needed, giving full attention to the individual involved. Follows all CPR procedures if necessary. Completes and submits required documentation of all incidents immediately to the Group Fitness Coordinators.Keeps class participants informed and aware of YMCA news and upcoming events, helping ensure the success of other YMCA programs and activities.Maintains accurate class counts and documents results as directed.Arrives a minimum of 15 minutes prior to class start time and ensures all classes begin on time.Ensures all equipment is properly stored after classes and that group fitness rooms are left clean and neat. Encourages all class participants to put away equipment used.Secures replacement or substitute instructors when unable to fulfill assigned class commitments. Notifies the Group Fitness Coordinators of all class changes and substitutions via email, ensuring all pertinent information is provided.Keeps substitutions and missed classes to a minimum. Provides ample advance notice for changes.Teaches a minimum of two classes per month. Substitute status may be available when needed, subject to program guidelines.Maintains current required certifications and provides copies to the Group Fitness Coordinators and Executive Administrator.Informs classes of Red Light classes and schedule changes.Ensures Group Fitness stereo equipment is kept in good condition and handled with care. Reports problems immediately to the Group Fitness Coordinators.Keeps management fully informed of all emergencies, complaints, incidents, and discipline problems in a timely manner.Notifies appropriate YMCA staff of all repair, maintenance, and supply needs.Remains in the group fitness room for a minimum of 15 minutes when no participants arrive at the scheduled start time.Never teaches unscheduled classes at the YMCA unless authorized by the Group Fitness Coordinators.Follows and enforces YMCA policies and procedures.Attends and completes all employee meetings and trainings as required.Performs other duties as assigned.DRESS CODEA clean and professional appearance is mandatory.Appropriate clothing for the specific class format being taught is required.Clothing displaying other health facility or gym information, verbiage, or logos is strictly prohibited.Must abide by the YMCA dress code as outlined in the Employee Handbook.YMCA LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES (LEADER)Mission Advancement: Accepts and demonstrates the Y’s values. Uses best practices and demonstrates up-to-date knowledge and skills in technology.QUALIFICATIONSHigh school graduate or equivalent preferred.Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED, and a nationally recognized group fitness certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM).Certifications in areas of expertise.At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.Previous experience working with diverse populations preferred.PHYSICAL DEMANDSAbility to conduct classes and activities.Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position, including leading classes, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
