Job summary

SBCS Chula Vista operates the Youth Development Academy at East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility, serving youth aged 14–24 through trauma‑informed, pro-social programming. This role supports group facilitation, case documentation, and collaboration with Probation and service partners to strengthen transition outcomes.

The YDA program focuses on evidence‑informed curricula, staff coverage for evenings and Saturdays, and reporting requirements to ensure ongoing program effectiveness and youth

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or 4+ years direct service with youth in justice system.
• Experience facilitating groups with at-risk youth preferred.
• Strong presentation and public speaking skills.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate daily evidence-based groups for youth at East Mesa Detention Facility.
• Complete training and implement CBT-based curricula.
• Work non-traditional hours including evenings and Saturdays.
• Maintain case records in the ETO database and generate progress reports.

Program

SBCS’ Youth Development Academy (YDA) is a partnership with San Diego County Probation Department to provide evidence informed, pro‑social, and developmentally appropriate programming to youth in custody at East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility. This program serves youth ages 14‑to‑24‑years old who have been committed to long‑term sentences for serious felony offenses. The Youth Development Academy uses a trauma‑informed, positive youth development model to support the youth and families we serve while in custody, and as they transition back to the community.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the YDA Program Coordinator & Program Director, the YDA Group Facilitator is responsible for providing group services to youth in the YDA at East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility. The YDA Group Facilitator will be responsible for facilitating evidence or promising based groups to YDA youth. Services will be in keeping with agency goals, objectives, mission, and style and provided within a team framework. Associates are responsible for working with the team in developing team goals and objectives and in meeting those goals and objectives, including but not limited to:

DUTIES

• Facilitation of daily, evidence-based groups for youth sentenced to YDA at East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility.
• Completes training, certification, and successful implementation of various CBT-based group curricula.
• Available to work non-traditional work hours, including evenings up to 8pm and Saturdays to support staff coverage.
• Maintains case records and client files in the Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) database as required by SBCS and its funding sources.
• Provides biweekly progress reports for all classes and group sessions completed to support youth successfully completing commitment programs.
• Participates in Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings with other team members.
• Appropriate coordination of contacts with Probation and other public and private organizations and individuals, as necessary to effectively serve clients. (e.g., progress reports to referral sources, client referrals to other agencies).
• Monthly statistical reports of services provided as required by SBCS.
• Conducts outreach to target population in order to effectively reach those in need of services.
• Participates in special projects and activities as related to agency’s goals and objectives.
• Participates in agency special events, such as fundraisers, annual meetings, and open houses.
• Crisis intervention services, and referrals to telephone and walk in persons.
• Work within a locked juvenile detention facility.
• Participates and assists in implementing program components.
• Attend all agency required meetings and trainings.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree is in psychology, sociology, criminal justice, social work, or closely related field OR a minimum of 4 years related experience providing direct service to justice involved youth (14 to 24 years old) as an equivalency.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience working with at-risk youth and their families. Experience should preferably be in a community-based or neighborhood service organization.
• Group facilitation experience, preferred.
• Experience working with justice-involved youth highly recommended.
• Must have shared life experience and/or relevant experience focused on youth and transition aged youth involved in the justice system (ages 14-24).
• Work within in an institutional setting to create a therapeutic environment.
• Demonstrates initiative, resourcefulness, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong public speaking and presentation skills
• Must possess good working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, including Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams to develop, update, maintain and manage spreadsheets and data reports.
• Ability to work with a diverse population, possess cultural sensitivity, and maintain appropriate boundaries with clients.

Condition of Employment

• Employment may be conditioned upon satisfactory completion of certain background clearances which may include a Department of Justice criminal background check requiring my fingerprints (Live Scan), screening through the National Sex Offender Public Website, drug test, tuberculosis (TB) test, and such additional clearances as may be required under the program.
• Candidates/employees who have received a conditional offer of employment will be required to undergo testing for controlled substances, (including THC and CBD), in accordance with the County of San Diego's drug and alcohol policy and the federal Controlled Substances Act.
• Candidate is required to have reliable transportation; therefore, the candidate must successfully complete a motor history check. Candidate must also possess and maintain a current valid California driver’s license and valid auto insurance policy. (Approximately 10% of the time.)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Mentally and emotionally: Ability to work under deadlines, various projects and dealing with clients in crisis and difficult situations.
