Job summary

YMCA seeks a Group Exercise Instructor to lead safe, engaging classes and support branch activities. You will foster member relationships, promote healthy lifestyles, and ensure a clean, safe workout area.

The role requires CPR/First Aid certification and a current national certification, with the ability to teach at least one class weekly. You will collaborate with the Fitness Coordinator/Director to plan sessions, follow emergency procedures, and attend staff meetings, maintaining

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certification to be obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • Must hold a current national certification from ACSM, ACE, AFAA, ISSA, NSCA, NETA or equivalent.
  • Must maintain certification for the type of class taught.
  • Willing to teach a minimum of one regular scheduled group exercise class per week.
  • Provide copies of all certifications and required CECs to fitness director/branch director annually.
  • If teaching specialty classes (Cycle, Pilates, Yoga, Zumba, Les Mills, etc.), must hold current specialty certification.
  • Excellent human relations and communication skills.
  • Team player; willing to substitute teach for other instructors.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe and effective workout for the scheduled class format.
  • Supervise and guide participants through warm-up, cardio endurance/strength, cool down, and stretch.
  • Keep workout area clean and equipment properly stored.
  • Arrive on time to clock in and prepare to teach.
  • Demonstrate variations or modifications to accommodate participants.
  • Report equipment issues to supervisor with details.
  • Know and follow emergency procedures and complete incident forms as needed.
  • Start and finish classes on time; arrange substitutes when unable to teach.
  • Ensure music and clothing are appropriate; avoid offensive language.
  • Encourage healthy lifestyles, not special diets or supplements.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings and events.
  • Keep classes fresh with new music and varied movements.
  • Develop member relations and involvement; provide individualized instruction.
  • Maintain professional relationships and avoid encouraging complaints; elevate feedback.
  • Be aware of safety and boundaries with consumers.
  • Complete abuse risk management training as required.
  • Follow policies for high-risk activities and supervision.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Abide by job-specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

Job description

Under supervision of the Fitness Coordinator/Director or Branch Director and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the group ex instructor is responsible for instructing safe, effective and fun group exercise classes, as well as enhancing the quality and growth of the program and retention of the participants of the fitness programs. The group exercise instructor will assist the Fitness Coordinator/Director or Branch Director with various branch activities such as special events, and other activities that occur on various occasions. Responsibilities include: developing member relationships, increasing program development and increasing member retention.

  • Provide a safe and effective workout for the class format scheduled.
  • Supervise and guide the participants through a workout that incorporates appropriate warm-up, cardiovascular endurance/strength, cool down, and stretch. Be aware of the various abilities of the participants and potential problems associated with form.
  • Provides a safe and clean environment by keeping workout area clean and free of obstacles. All equipment/mats should be cleaned and put away before you leave.
  • Arrives at the branch YMCA in a timely manner in order to clock or sign in and make necessary preparations to teach the class
  • Demonstrate variations or modifications to encourage participants
  • Report to supervisor any equipment that is not working properly. Describe what the problem is and when it happened.
  • Know and follow emergency procedures as situations warrant. Incident forms should be completed for any accidents/injuries that occur. Reports should be submitted to your supervisor or the Branch Directors before leaving the facility.
  • Start and finish classes on time. If unable to teach a scheduled class, instructor will find a substitute to cover classes that you are assigned.
  • Appropriate music and clothing. Music selections should not contain offensive language
  • Encourage the practice of healthy lifestyles, NOT special diets or supplements
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings, special events, and/or Launches.
  • Keeps classes fresh by incorporating new music, and exercises or movement patterns to classes.
  • Developing member relations and member involvement
  • Providing individualized exercise and fitness instruction based on the overall needs of the class
  • Speaks positively about other instructors and programs to members.
  • Developing member relations and member involvement, willingness to problem solve and not encourage members to submit complaints, but rather elevate feedback to leadership.
  • Physical requirements for this position include: Walking, Sitting, Climbing, Seeing, Crouching, Stooping, Standing, Hearing, Speaking, Kneeling, Lifting (50lbs), Carrying (50lbs), Pushing (50lbs) and Pulling (50lbs).
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training.
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a current national certification from one of the following national accrediting agencies with a nationally recognized organization such as ACSM, ACE, AFAA, ISSA, IFTA, NSCA, NETA. If outside of these organizations, you may submit a request to consider approval.
  • Must maintain nationally recognized certification in the type of class you are teaching.
  • Must be willing to teach a minimum of one regular scheduled group exercise classes per week
  • Must maintain all appropriate certifications and provide copies of all certifications and required CEC’s to fitness director or branch director each year
  • Instructors teaching specialty classes such as Cycle, Pilates, Yoga, Zumba, Les Mills etc. must hold a current certification in the specialty taught.
