Job summary

Holyoke-YMCA is looking for a Group Exercise Instructor to support the community through fitness programs. In this role, you will lead invigorating classes that engage members, promote wellness, and adhere to YMCA policies.

The ideal candidate will have group exercise experience, relevant certifications, and a passion for building relationships within the community. This position requires flexibility to teach during early mornings, evenings, or weekends.

Qualifications

  • Availability to teach early morning, evening, or weekends.
  • 1+ year of group exercise experience preferred.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Group exercise instructors will instruct group classes, providing excellent service to members in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Leads group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  2. Conducts energizing, fun, safe, and educational classes.
  3. Builds effective relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  4. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  5. Keeps accurate class attendance records.
  6. Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  7. Ensures proper opening and closing of program space for each class.
  8. Accident/incident form completion with 24 hours of incident. Supervisor should be informed the same day as incident.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Availability to teach early morning, evening, or weekends per week for those interested in teaching higher intensity and specialty classes (Yoga, Pilates)
  • Weekday morning/early afternoon required for those interested in teaching older adult classes
  • 1+ year of group exercise experience preferred
  • Possess certification/training from ACE, AFAA, NASM, or SCW Fitness or certification in area of expertise
  • Good human relation skills and willingness to serve members
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • YMCA Leader Certification within 6 months
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.

  • The YMCA does not provide fitness apparel. Instructors should wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the class they are teaching.
