Group Exercise Instructor
Reporting to the Health and Wellness Director and working with other Wellness staff, the Group Exercise Instructor instructs group exercise classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes all skill and fitness levels. Effectively builds community within class. Modifies class as needed to meet varied health, ability and cultural needs.

Key Responsibilities
- Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to provide high quality experiences for members and guests.
- Asks and answers questions from program participants to support them in achieving health and well‑being goals.
- Maintains knowledge of wellness trends through YUSA courses and external training.
- Builds authentic relationships with members and helps them connect with each other and the YMCA.
- Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, health, and culture.
- Celebrates program participants’ achievements and progress.
- Keeps accurate class attendance records using MotionVibe.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures and responds to emergency situations.
- Resolves member issues professionally and in alignment with YMCA values.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- At least one year of experience in a group exercise setting.
- NCCA accredited certification (e.g., ACE, AFFA, NASM, NSCA, ISSA). If teaching a specific format, a current certification in that format is required (e.g., Yoga, Spin, Les Mills Body Pump, Body Combat).
- Experience in health and wellness programming and group instruction.
- Understanding of internal and external marketing/special events.
Skills and Competencies:
- Interpret and implement the mission and goals of the YMCA into classes/programs.
- Commitment to an inclusive environment for all backgrounds, abilities, and experience levels.
- Effective communication with adults, youth, teens, seniors, and special populations.
- Team collaboration with staff.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
- Minimum one year of fitness experience. (Degree in Exercise Science or Physical Education preferred but not required.)
