Job summary

Xylem Tree Experts in Indiana seeks a Groundsperson to support crews by clearing brush and trees from the ground and performing site cleanup. The role involves operating basic equipment, loading debris, and following strict safety practices.

Applicants should be able to work outdoors in varied weather and have a valid driver’s license. Experience in vegetation management or related fields is preferred; a high school diploma or equivalent is suggested.

Responsibilities

  • Perform ground-based clearing of brush and trees and assist crew.
  • Load/unload trucks with logs, brush, and debris; feed brush into chipper.
  • Set up and break down road signs; flag traffic for safety.
  • Drive a truck or operate other equipment as assigned.
  • Perform basic maintenance on trucks and equipment; report major repairs.
  • Follow safety rules and maintain PPE and protective gear.
  • Travel for storm restoration work when needed.

Job description

Pay or shift range: $17 USD to $18 USD. This is an estimated pay range for this position. Final offers are based on various factors, including skill set, experience, location, qualifications, and other job‑related reasons.

Description

The Groundsperson supports the crew by performing work from the ground, including clearing brush and trees as directed, and conducting clean‑up on each job site.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Always follow and help enforce safe practices and rules.
  • Keep the work area clear of debris.
  • Work from the ground and clear undergrowth from the right‑of‑way using handsaws, pole saws, pruners, loppers, and gas‑powered chainsaws to cut brush and trees.
  • Load and unload trucks with logs, brush, and debris; feed brush into the brush chipper.
  • Use hand lines to lower limbs and equipment.
  • Perform general clean‑up of job sites after work completion.
  • Carry, prepare, and store materials, tools, and equipment at the work site.
  • Set up and break down road signs as directed.
  • Flag traffic to protect employees and the public from potential harm or injury.
  • Drive a truck or operate other equipment as assigned.
  • Perform basic maintenance on trucks and equipment; keep all assigned equipment neat and orderly; report major repair needs to the Foreperson.
  • Safeguard employees and the public from hazards by enforcing safe job practices, keeping the area clean and orderly, and maintaining frequent voice communication with co‑workers.
  • Perform duties for storm work as needed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Groundspersons have no direct reports.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Prior experience in electric utility vegetation management, construction, logging, landscaping, mechanical, or military industries is preferred.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or educational equivalent is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Possess physical strength and balance to drag heavy limbs, use chainsaws and pruners in uneven terrain.
  • Be able to work outdoors under varying and sometimes adverse weather conditions.
  • Be able to hear verbal instructions from a distance.
  • Obtain and maintain first‑aid certification and CPR.
  • Wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Hold a valid driver’s license if hired for a driving position.
  • Comprehend verbal job instructions/information.
  • Maintain balance over uneven terrain.
  • Communicate effectively with others.
  • Exhibit endurance necessary to perform duties throughout a standard eight to ten hour day.
  • Operate and service all required tools and equipment.
  • Travel out of town for storm restoration work when needed.

Position requires the employee to pass a background check and drug screen as required for this job.
