Job summary

The Salvation Army Wonderland Camp and Conference Center in Illinois is seeking a Groundskeeper to maintain grounds, assist with camp projects, and support facility operations year-round.

The role requires physical endurance and the ability to operate groundskeeping equipment; prior grounds care experience is helpful and a high school diploma or GED is required. This is a non-exempt, full-time position at Wonderland Camp.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Mow, trim, and maintain landscaping and grounds, including trash pickup and brush clearing.
  • Prepare firewood and campfire sites as necessary.
  • Build or maintain all terraces to prevent soil erosion.
  • Maintain roads, sidewalks, trails, and outdoor surfaces.
  • Removal of snow and ice from designated areas and apply de-icing materials proactively and as needed.
  • Operate, inspect, and maintain groundskeeping equipment and tools safely, reporting maintenance needs.
  • Assist with seasonal projects and facility improvements.
  • Support other departments as needed, including housekeeping during high turnover days.
  • Complete and maintain trainings and certifications.
  • Attend meetings as assigned.
  • All other duties as assigned.

PAY RANGE: $15.75 - 18.90

MISSION

The Salvation Army Wonderland Camp and Conference Center exists to support the ministry of the Salvation Army by providing the opportunity to experience Christ through focused programs in a natural, safe, camp conference environment.

OUTCOMES

Maintain the grounds so they are in clean and attractive condition.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Mow, trim, and maintain landscaping and grounds, including trash pick-ups, clearing brush and performing other general groundskeeping duties.
  2. Prepare firewood and campfire sites as necessary.
  3. Build or maintain all terraces to prevent soil erosion.
  4. Maintain all roads, sidewalks, trails, and outdoor surfaces.
  5. Removal of snow and ice from designated areas and apply de-icing materials proactively and as needed.
  6. Operate, inspect, and maintain groundskeeping equipment and tools in a safe and responsible manner, reporting maintenance needs or equipment concerns promptly.
  7. Assist with seasonal projects, even preparation, facility improvements, and other camp projects as assigned.
  8. Provide support to other departments as operational needs require, including assisting with maintenance, housekeeping during high volume turnover days, program support, even set-up and other camp operations.
  9. Complete and maintain all required trainings and certifications.
  10. Attend meetings as assigned.
  11. All other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience: Previous experience in grounds care helpful.
JOB LIMITATIONS
  • This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • This individual will keep the Maintenance Manager informed on all critical issues related to their area of responsibility.
  • This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • This position is required to do physically demanding work on a regular basis including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing, digging, and operating equipment Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use ground-keeping equipment and be able to operate a vehicle.
  • The work environment for this position includes an office and outdoor environment with a low to high noise level.
  • Will work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

  • This position reports to the Maintenance Manager.
  • In contacts related to this position's duties this individual acts as a representative of the Army and its mission.
PERFORMANCE MEASURES
  • This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.
