JOB SUMMARY

The Part-Time Groundskeeper performs routine and specialized golf course maintenance duties at LinRick Golf Course for the Richland County Recreation Commission (RCRC). Work includes operating commercial turf equipment; mowing and maintaining greens, fairways, tee boxes, roughs, and practice areas; raking and maintaining bunkers; assisting with irrigation-system repairs; and supporting the general upkeep, appearance, and safety of the golf course property.

The position performs manual labor and works outdoors in varying weather conditions. Work may include early mornings, weekends, holidays, and other nontraditional hours based on golf course operational needs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Operates commercial turf mowers, utility vehicles, tractors, blowers, trimmers, edgers, and other grounds-maintenance equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Mows, trims, and maintains golf course greens, fairways, tee boxes, roughs, collars, approaches, and other designated turf areas according to established maintenance schedules and standards.
  • Rakes, edges, and maintains sand bunkers; assists with bunker repair, sand distribution, drainage maintenance, and removal of debris.
  • Maintains the practice facility, including the driving range, practice greens, chipping areas, putting greens, teeing areas, range equipment, turf surfaces, and surrounding grounds.
  • Assists with irrigation-system maintenance and repairs, including identifying leaks or malfunctioning heads, replacing sprinkler heads, assisting with pipe repairs, adjusting irrigation coverage, and reporting irrigation concerns to the Golf Course Superintendent or designee.
  • Performs general grounds and property maintenance, including removing litter and debris; emptying trash receptacles; blowing off cart paths, parking areas, sidewalks, and maintenance areas; and maintaining landscaped areas.
  • Assists with course setup and daily preparation, including changing cup locations, setting tee markers, placing signage, maintaining ball washers, filling water stations, and ensuring the course is clean and presentable for golfers.
  • Assists with the care and maintenance of trees, shrubs, flower beds, landscaped areas, drainage areas, and other golf-course property as assigned.
  • Performs basic equipment inspections before and after use; cleans equipment; checks fuel and fluid levels; ensures proper gas/oil mix ratios where applicable; and reports equipment damage, maintenance needs, or unsafe conditions.
  • Performs minor equipment adjustments and routine maintenance within the employee’s assigned skill level and reports repair needs promptly.
  • Assists with the safe storage, handling, and transport of fertilizers, fuels, tools, equipment, and other maintenance materials in accordance with applicable safety procedures.
  • Follows oral and written instructions, established safety practices, golf course maintenance standards, and RCRC policies and procedures.
  • Assists other Golf Course and RCRC staff with general maintenance, special events, course improvements, storm cleanup, and related operational needs.
  • May drive RCRC vehicles or golf course utility vehicles between work areas and RCRC locations as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Six (6) months of experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, turf maintenance, golf course maintenance, agricultural work, equipment operation, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience operating commercial mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, or other turf-maintenance equipment is preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work may be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used in operating mowers, trimmers, light equipment, and tractors.
  • Knowledge of routine service and upkeep of equipment.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems and irrigation maintenance.
  • Knowledge of golf course constructions, maintenance, and upkeep procedures.
  • Skill in performing general vehicle and power equipment maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to meet RCRC standards for assigned functions.
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License to drive an RCRC vehicle, and produce an acceptable 10 year driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium work and requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work may also require balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity in data/color/observations/equipment, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is typically performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands. Requires working weekends and being able to withstand exposure to various climatic conditions.
