State of California, Coalinga, is seeking a Groundskeeper to maintain a large hospital greenhouse and nursery, propagate and care for flowers and ornamental plants, lay out and plant shrubs, and supervise a small grounds crew as needed.
The role requires substantial physical work, outdoor labor, and the ability to operate grounds maintenance tools. This is a 12 Month Limited Term - Full Time appointment at Coalinga, with in-office work location and a flexible schedule.
$3,654.00 - $4,534.00 per Month
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
This position is for Coalinga State Hospital.
Propagate and care for flowers and ornamental plants in a large greenhouse and nursery and to lay out, plant, and care for flowers and ornamental plants and shrubs; or to work with and be in charge of a small crew doing gardening and general grounds maintenance work; may instruct, lead or supervise patient/client workers; and do other work as required.

The employee is required to work any shift and schedule in a variety of settings throughout the hospital and may be required to work overtime. Groundskeeping activities involve remedying conditions through physical labor. Routine work requires a full range of body motion which demands ability to work above one's head as in pruning trees and to load vegetation into truck beds. Work at ground level requires an ability to plant seeds and pick up tools and vegetation from the ground. At least average strength is required to carry and operate tools and equipment, load and offload plants, and position large plants. Incumbents must be free of debilitating effects of allergies from common outdoor causes such as pollen, dust, grass, etc. and must possess the physical ability and coordination to operate specialized grounds maintenance vehicles, and to use tools and operate power equipment effectively. An incumbent must be physically capable of working at rates sufficient to accomplish his or her share of the physical workload.

It is a self-contained psychiatric hospital constructed with a security perimeter. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) provides perimeter security as well as transportation of patients to outside medical services and court proceedings.
