Job description

Position Information

Facilities Services is recruiting for multiple Groundskeepers. The full salary range for the Groundskeeper position is $21.05 - $29.47 per hour. However, the expected pay scale for this position is $25.00 up to $29.47 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Reporting to the Landscape Grounds Supervisor in the Facilities Services Environmental Resource Services Department, the Groundskeeper is on a team of landscape professionals who perform various landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks throughout the University of California, Riverside campus. The Groundskeeper provides service to campus customers in maintaining the grounds surrounding the many buildings and facilities, outdoor gathering areas, walkways, building entrances, and hard and soft landscapes of the campus. The Groundskeeper has a shared responsibility of keeping the campus beautiful, clean, welcoming, and safe for visitors, students, faculty, and staff. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff. As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.

Educational Requirements

High School Diploma

Experience Requirements
  • One year of experience maintaining grounds or landscaping; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience using landscaping hand and power tools/equipment.
  • Experience using mechanical tools required to maintain landscaping equipment.
  • Experience managing and completing minor repairs on irrigation systems.
Minimum Requirements
  • Ability to work effectively; following through on assignments with minimal direction and fluctuating workload.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in the English language with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Willingness and ability to work scheduled, unscheduled and emergency overtime.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule (weekends and holidays; early mornings, mornings, evening or graveyard shifts), as needed to accommodate campus event schedules.
  • Ability to perform heavy/physically demanding tasks which may require lifting up to 75 pounds. Ability to safely work from ladders up to eighteen feet high and on the roofs of buildings up to four stories high. Ability to work with all hand and power tools or equipment common to the landscaping trade that require constant physical demands from ground level to overhead.
  • Ability to work for prolonged periods of time in conditions with excessive noise requiring ear and eye protection from various equipment. Ability to safely work around moving machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to work for extended periods of time in extreme inclement weather conditions ranging from high heat with humidity, to freezing and rainy conditions.
  • Ability to work in wet, malodorous and dusty conditions due to plant pollens, grass, tree and shrub clippings, fertilizers, animal droppings and fumes due to gas powered engines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the job, including SB-198 Illness and Injury Prevention Program (IIPP).
  • Knowledge of UCR/UC policies, procedures and systems.
  • Knowledge and skill to use MS Office programs and email.
  • Ability to use desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices. Experience using desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices, and using e-mail.
  • Ability to prioritize work orders, routine work, emergency requests, combined with the knowledge to choose the proper materials and equipment to accomplish the work in the most expeditious and safe manner.
