Job summary

Pikes Peak State College in Colorado Springs is seeking a Grounds & Nursery II to maintain campus grounds, irrigation systems, and related facilities. This role requires leading a work crew, coordinating daily activities, and ensuring safety and quality across tasks.

The position covers mowing, irrigation programming, equipment maintenance, records management, and cross-unit support. Pre-employment checks and driving record verification are required; travel between campuses may be needed.

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of grounds care and maintenance experience including experience with grounds equipment, irrigation systems, and serving as a work leader.

Responsibilities

  • Grounds maintenance: mowing, trimming, weeding, fertilizing, landscaping, cleanup, herbicide and pesticide application, snow and ice removal, minor repairs to walkways, roads, and parking lots.
  • Irrigation systems: installs, inspects, programs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs commercial irrigation systems; adjust controllers based on weather, soil, and plant needs; repair leaks, lines, valves, sprinkler components; improve water efficiency.
  • Lead work: coordinates daily Grounds activities, assigns work orders, assists with snow call matrix, trains staff, promotes safe work practices, monitors quality and quantity of work.
  • Equipment maintenance: operates, cleans, and performs minor repairs on grounds and motor pool equipment; reports repair needs and maintains tools and storage areas.
  • Facilities support: assists other Facilities units with service requests to maintain a safe, clean, learning environment.
  • Work orders and records: records work hours and leave, maintains electronic records, monitors email and SchoolDude; communicates with customers and updates status.
  • Other duties: performs other related duties as assigned.

Pikes Peak State College is located at the foot of Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado. PPSC offers broad programs in transfer, occupational, and preparatory subjects emphasizing student and community needs. Colorado Springs is a great city to both work and live. NOTE: This full-time position will typically work Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Flexibility may be required to meet the needs of the department. This position is required to travel between all PPSC campuses.

This full-time position provides general support to the work unit by performing a variety of tasks to maintain the appearance, condition, and safety of college grounds, facilities, and equipment. Primary duties include:

Grounds Maintenance

Performs skilled grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, weeding, fertilizing, landscaping, cleanup, herbicide and pesticide application, snow and ice removal, and minor repairs to walkways, roads, and parking lots.

Irrigation Systems

Installs, inspects, programs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs commercial irrigation systems. Adjusts controllers based on weather, soil, and plant needs; repairs leaks, lines, valves, and sprinkler components; and recommends improvements for water efficiency and coverage.

Lead Work

Coordinates daily Grounds activities, assigns work orders, assists with the snow call matrix, trains and supports Grounds/Nursery I staff, promotes safe work practices, and monitors the quality and quantity of work performed.

Equipment Maintenance

Operates, maintains, cleans, and performs minor repairs on grounds and motor pool equipment. Reports repair needs and maintains tools, equipment, supplies, and storage areas in a safe and organized condition.

Facilities Support

Assists other Facilities work units with service requests and projects to maintain a safe, clean, and comfortable learning environment for students and staff.

Work Orders and Records

Records work hours and leave, maintains electronic records, and monitors email and the SchoolDude work order system. Communicates with customers, updates work status, and provides anticipated completion time frames.

Other Duties

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience Only

Two (2) years of grounds care and maintenance experience appropriate to the job assignment described above, including experience with grounds equipment, irrigation systems, and serving as a work leader. Must demonstrate effective oral and written communication, teamwork, multitasking, and independent work skills.
