Job summary

The Grounds Foreman at the State of Indiana oversees exterior grounds and facilities across a 60+ acre National Guard installation. You will lead work groups, supervise contractors, and develop seasonal plans to keep the site safe, operational, and mission-ready.

Responsibilities include maintaining sidewalks, drainage, fencing, lighting, and outdoor assets, plus supporting snow removal and weather-response operations. A degree is not required and CDL may be needed for road work.

Qualifications

• Broad knowledge of various grounds and roads maintenance practices.
• Broad knowledge of landscaping and road repair techniques and procedures.
• Ability to prepare and use formulas for insecticides.
• Ability to set up and maintain accurate reports and records.
• Knowledge of operating jackhammers, compressors, graders, dozers, and snowplows.
• Mechanical skills to maintain and repair shop equipment like mowers, trimmers and saws.
• CDL license may be required to operate vehicles on roadways.
• Ability to obtain a favorable military clearance for access card.

Role Overview:

The Grounds Foreman is responsible for the maintenance, appearance, functionality, and safety of all exterior grounds and outdoor infrastructure across a 60+ acre National Guard installation. This role serves as the primary technician for exterior systems and grounds care, while also leading work groups and overseeing contractor activities related to grounds, landscaping, outdoor facilities upkeep, and seasonal operations. You will work under general direction, the Grounds Foreman develops and executes seasonal grounds plans; maintains specialized equipment; monitors site conditions; and performs preventive maintenance on sidewalks, drainage systems, fences, exterior lighting, roof drains, helipads, gazebos, and other outdoor assets. The incumbent ensures the installation remains operational, safe, secure, and mission-ready.This position also supports snow removal operations, assists other maintenance trades when needed, and helps respond to weather events, storm damage, and exterior safety concerns.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

• Check and order supplies and other equipment needed for jobs.
• Direct and work with employees in accomplishing tasks.
• Clean wooded areas and riverbanks.
• Plant trees, shrubbery, and flowers.
• Inspect landscapes by mowing and cleans grounds.
• Maintain roadways and hauls gravel, blacktop, or oil.
• Operate snow removal equipment on roads, sidewalks, and parking lots
• Haul television sets to repair shops.
• Set up beds and other furniture as need arises for one area to another.
• Supervise spraying and pruning of bushes, vines, flowers, and trees regularly.
• See, fertilizes and roll lawns.
• Repair, install and maintain all grounds equipment.
• Replace damaged or fallen signs and reflector during snow, ice or fire emergencies and roof collapses.
• Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

What You'll Need for Success:

• May be required to obtain CDL license to operate assigned vehicles on roadways.
• Ability to obtain a favorable military clearance to obtain an access card.
