Job summary

Humble ISD is seeking a Groundskeeper to safely maintain district grounds and support a positive learning environment. The role requires operating grounds equipment, following safety policies, and assisting with maintenance tasks as needed.

The incumbent will drive a district vehicle, perform routine preventive maintenance, and respond to after-hours needs when required. A valid Texas driver’s license and a High School diploma or GED are required.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Maintain valid Texas Driver’s License and good driving record.
  • Knowledge of grounds equipment and its safe use.
  • Ability to operate power-driven equipment.
  • Two years of groundskeeping experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Attend required training seminars.
  • Maintain playground structures and repair fences and irrigation as needed.
  • Drive district vehicle and operate grounds equipment.

Primary Purpose

Safely maintain all district grounds in a manner that supports learning through service.

Qualifications
Education/Certification
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Maintain valid Texas Driver’s License required and have a good driving record.
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Knowledge of grounds equipment.
  • Skill in the use and care of all equipment used in grounds work.
  • Ability to understand detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to operate power-driven equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize tasks and coordinate multiple projects to meet specific deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain professional behavior, appearance, and work ethic to represent the school district in a positive manner at all times.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy and provide a high level of customer service to administrators, co-workers, and staff.
Experience
  • 2 years experience in commercial or educational groundskeeping desired.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Ensure that all facilities are clean and safe, secure, and promote a positive learning environment.
  • Adhere to all Humble ISD safety policies.
  • Attend all training seminars as instructed by your supervisor.
  • Pick up trash and debris, cut and remove dead trees, fill potholes, clean storm drains, repair fences, repair lawn irrigation and relocate furniture and equipment.
  • Assist in the maintenance of all playground structures.
  • Report any unsafe conditions to your supervisor.
  • Assist other departments as needed.
  • Assist with emergencies and be available to respond to district after hours needs, emergencies and natural disasters.
  • Drive a district vehicle and operate various grounds equipment.
  • Work varied shifts as needed.
  • Wear Humble ISD issued uniform and ID daily.
Safety
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Must adhere to all guidelines set forth on MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) when handling chemicals.
  • Must wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) when performing any task which could cause injury or illness.
  • Take necessary action immediately and report any condition which could cause injury or illness.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing, etc.
Communication
  • Maintain a positive and effective relationship with coworkers, supervisor and other district personnel.
  • Provide outstanding customer service.
  • Maintain good judgment and decision making when dealing with supervisor, co-workers, students, parents, and general public.

  • Implement and comply with all Board policies.
  • Insure that all purchasing and procurement policies are adhered to.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Garden tools; small hand tools; power tools; heavy equipment including backhoe, tractor, grader; and power mower; light truck or van.
  • Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Motion: Frequent walking, standing, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving
  • Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (50 pounds and over) on a daily basis.
  • Environment: Work outside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, high noise, vibration; possible exposure to chemical (herbicides and fertilizer) and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours with occasional overtime.
  • Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Other: Frequent District wide travel. Occasional travel outside of school district boundaries. Workload is deadline driven. Operate various types of equipment with prolonged use of equipment. Frequent contact with parents, community, and/or other district/campus personnel. Maintain a positive driving record. Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.
