Job summary

Johnston County Public Schools Facility Services in Smithfield, NC is hiring for Grounds I. This role supports the maintenance of school grounds, athletic fields, and drainage systems to enhance the instructional environment.

Starting immediately, full-time (12 months) with pay grade 56. Must be capable of regular physical work, operating small engines and a work truck, and communicating with supervisors and staff.

Qualifications

• 1 year of landscaping maintenance experience preferred.
• General knowledge of grounds equipment: zero-turn mowers, trimmers, edgers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers.

Responsibilities

• Cuts lawns, trims and edges grass.
• Prunes shrubs and trees to shape growth.
• Removes leaves, branches, or twigs.
• Rakes and composts leaves or disposes of debris.
• Cleans grounds and removes litter.
• Shovels snow from walks and driveways.
• Spreads salt and sand on pathways.
• Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs.
• Waters lawn and plants.
• Cleans drainage ditches and culverts.

POSITION: Grounds I

LOCATION: Facility Services

SALARY: Pay Grade 56

REPORTS TO: Grounds Supervisor/Foreman

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time - 12 months

JOB GOAL:

To develop and maintain school grounds, athletic fields, and drainage systems in a manner that will enhance the public image of schools and the instructional environment

KNOWLEDGE AND ATTRIBUTES:

Someone who is reliable, possesses a strong work ethic and self motivated

• 1 year of experience in landscaping maintenance preferred
• Someone who possesses a general knowledge and understanding of grounds equipment: zeroturn mowers, string trimmers, edgers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, etc.
• Someone who has knowledge of OSHA regulations, proper PPE protocol and safetyregulations.
• Must be able to communicate efficiently and professionally with supervisor, foreman, crewleaders and all Johnston County Public Schools staff
• Someone who is capable of operating a work truck and trailer safely
• Someone who has general knowledge of preventative maintenance on equipment: Changingblades, greasing and cleaning off equipment

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Cuts lawns, trim and edges grass
• Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth
• Removes damaged leaves, branches, or twigs
• Rakes and composts or disposes of leaves
• Cleans grounds and removes litter
• Shovels snow from walks and driveways
• Spreads salt and sand on public passage ways to prevent ice buildup
• Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs
• Waters lawn, shrubs, and flowers
• Cleans out drainage ditches and culverts
• Knowledge of safety hazards, rules, regulations and implements safety precautions.
• Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to perform medium/heavy lifting exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/orup to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Must be able to work in all weather conditions
• Must be able to walk far distances while operating small engine equipment on a daily basis

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• High School Diploma or equivalentpreferred.
• Must possess a valid drivers license
