Job description

Overview

Application close date: Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We are developing reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we advance the history of spaceflight.

The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, focused on space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit.

Description

Our Blue Ring (BNS) program is looking for experienced personnel to join their ground system team as a site reliability engineer. We are a passionate group developing mobility missions that will impact the history of space exploration. We are a team with wide-ranging skill sets that value problem-solving. You will work in a fast-paced dynamic environment, contributing innovative solutions, while demonstrating personal leadership, technical competence, and attention to detail. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and reliable spaceflight.

As a Site Reliability Engineer, you will help build, integrate, deploy, and monitor software required for the Blue Ring (BNS) Mission Operations Center used to fly on-orbit vehicles. Join us in enabling Blue Origin's vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth — passion for our mission is required!

As part of a hardworking team of engineers and mission operators, you will work closely with space vehicle and ground system teams. You will be responsible for developing, testing and deploying software that will enable our solutions to perform mission-critical functions, including mission activity planning and scheduling, commanding and on-orbit operations, telemetry monitoring and display, operational communications, mission visualization, flight/ground system integration/testing, and operations training.

Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, test, verify and deploy mission operations software systems, ensuring the success of the overall Ground System (hardware/software) supporting Blue Origin space mission operations.
  • Develop, monitor and troubleshoot software infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers representing flight vehicle systems, mission control infrastructure, operations disciplines, and customers to define software requirements, architectures, and designs.
  • Develop rapid prototypes to prove out concepts and quantify technical risks.
  • Lead and participate in post-incident reviews, driving actionable improvements to system reliability.
  • Coordinate with mission control infrastructure and mission system engineers to plan, develop, and lead system verification and qualification, ensuring software products meet system requirements and safety-critical standards.
  • Produce technical documentation for software architecture, design, verification plans, user manuals, and training material.
  • Follow software development processes that meet Blue Origin and customer-required standards to ensure software safety and reliability.
  • Support frequent update cycles in support of pre-flight testing, mission validation exercises, and operations training events.
  • Support mission control software operations responsibilities (maintenance, flaw correction, enhancements) during operator training; ground data system verification, validation, and certification; spacecraft integration; and flight.
  • Integrate software components, create and run unit-level and system-level tests, validate using Software-in-the-Loop and Hardware-in-the-Loop simulators, and release certified code.
  • Contribute to production of technical documentation for software design, verification plans, user manuals and training material.
Qualifications
  • B.S. or higher in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, aerospace engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of software development experience or experience as a Site Reliability Engineer.
  • Experience in software engineering over the full lifecycle of software development, including system design and analysis, requirement capture and development, software implementation and verification, system integration, qualification, and release.
  • Experience in software build automation, continuous integration, configuration management, verification, and deployment.
  • Demonstrated experience with modern CI/CD practices and infrastructure-as-code tooling such as Terraform and Pulumi.
  • Experience architecting and managing cloud infrastructure with common cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP).
  • Experience with Kubernetes and service meshes like Istio/Cilium/Linkerd.
  • Proficient in developing in Linux environments.
  • Proficient in at least one programming language (Python, Go, Rust, Java).
  • Highly organized team player with excellent technical written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Desired
  • Top Secret Security Clearance.
  • Experience developing complex applications in Python.
  • Experience with REST APIs, Kafka, GRPC.
  • Experience in web development and/or database development and interfaces.
  • Experience developing software systems for fault monitoring and alarm notification, human command interfaces, and spacecraft subsystems software.
