Pay: Pay Range: $25.17+ per hour. Shift differential may apply: 10% for some or all hours on second shift and 15% for some or all hours on third shift. Details provided with offer. Position overview
This is a grossing position for an individual with limited experience grossing surgical specimens. The employee will perform surgical gross examinations of small, uncomplicated specimens, and some more complex specimens with supervisor approval. Supervision level varies by specimen type and is determined by the technical supervisor and/or laboratory director.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of surgical specimens for histologic processing, following policies and procedures
- Ensure proper specimen accessioning and labeling; maintain specimen integrity and accurate patient identification
- Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated specimens; note all lesions, markings and sutures
- Gross moderate to high complexity/complicated specimens under supervision appropriate to training/experience
- Handle a broader range of specimens with indirect supervision (e.g., gall bladders, oriented skin lesions)
- May oversee Grossing Technician I
- Escalate non-routine, complicated specimens to Pathologist Assistants
- Record measurements, weight, volume, and any abnormal findings
- Dissect specimens and prepare tissues for histologic processing
- May be trained to perform basic Histology functions (embedding, microtomy, stains, frozen sectioning) per SOP requirements
- Prepare non-gynecological specimens (cytopreparation, staining, coverslipping, etc.) after training; includes FNA specimens
- Complete related paperwork (workload recording, PM/temperature charts, etc.)
- Follow laboratory procedures for job responsibilities
- Interact with pathologists regarding gross dissection/description; some procedures require direct supervision by a pathologist
- Identify problems affecting test performance and communicate via supervisor/manager as needed
- Ensure compliance with safety, quality control, QA standards; comply with CLIA and CAP regulations
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and complete other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required Work Experience: Meets corporate Minimum Qualifications for Personnel Performing Tissue Gross Examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR 493.1489
Preferred Work Experience: 3 years of histology and/or grossing experience
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Lift and carry objects: 1–10 lbs frequently; 11–25 lbs occasionally; 36–50 lbs seldom; >50 lbs require assistance
- Ability to stand and work at the bench for long periods; frequent walking/standing
- May use a wide variety of manual tools and instruments requiring manual dexterity
