Job description

Purpose:

The Grossing Technician supports the anatomic pathology department by accessioning, preparing, grossly examining, and processing routine surgical pathology specimens. This position performs defined gross descriptions, orientation, inking, sectioning, tissue selection, cassette preparation, and related specimen management activities for routine biopsies and low-complexity specimens under the supervision of a Pathologist or Pathologists' Assistant. The role supports efficient pathology operations by maintaining specimen integrity, assisting with intraoperative consultation support and postmortem examination activities as assigned, and ensuring compliance with departmental, regulatory, confidentiality, infection prevention, and safety standards.

Nature and Scope:

The Grossing Technician performs routine preanalytical, analytical, and postanalytical support functions within anatomic pathology. Preanalytical responsibilities include specimen transport, receipt, accessioning, requisitioning, labeling, data entry, quality checks, and preparation of specimens, cassettes, instruments, and materials for examination. Analytical responsibilities include supporting the macroscopic examination of routine, uncomplicated, or low-complexity surgical pathology specimens, including accurate description, orientation, inking, sectioning, tissue selection, cassette preparation, and identification of specimens requiring escalation. Postanalytical responsibilities include tissue processing support, slide/block/specimen retention and retrieval, equipment and workstation cleaning, specimen storage, biohazardous and chemical waste disposal, supply stocking, documentation, and routine maintenance activities. Work is performed under the direction and supervision of a qualified Pathologists' Assistant or Pathologist. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining specimen integrity; identifying, correcting, or promptly reporting issues that may affect test performance or result reporting; documenting corrective actions as required; and adhering to applicable departmental, hospital, corporate compliance, infection prevention, safety, confidentiality, and quality standards, including CAP, CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, Joint Commission, state, local, and federal requirements. The position requires current technical knowledge, documented competency in assigned gross room procedures, and completion of required training, continuing education, and mandatory education programs. Scope of grossing activity is limited to routine biopsies and low‑complexity specimens that do not require selective sampling or that are otherwise approved under departmental policy and competency. Non‑routine, complex, or out‑of‐scope specimens are escalated appropriately to the Pathologists' Assistant or Pathologist. This position does provide patient care.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Education: Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform job duties safely and effectively. Bachelor's degree in chemical, biological, clinical, medical laboratory science, medical technology, or related laboratory science required unless otherwise required by applicable CLIA/CAP personnel qualification standards for assigned grossing activities. Must meet applicable CLIA/CAP personnel qualification requirements for assigned grossing activities.
• Experience: Previous laboratory, anatomic pathology, histology, gross room, specimen handling, medical terminology, or related healthcare experience preferred. Documented hands‑on laboratory training and competency in assigned grossing procedures required prior to independent performance of assigned tasks. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, problem‑solving ability, and ability to prioritize workload are required.
• License(s): Requires current State of Nevada license for Laboratory Assistant or an application must be submitted during the six‑month interim/training period. Failure to apply for and/or receive a license by the seventh month will result in termination.
• Certification(s): NoneVoluntary grossing technician or related anatomic pathology training/certification preferred.
• Computer / Typing: Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, and Word and have the ability to use the computer to complete online learning requirements for job‑specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
