Job summary

Optima Dermatology is seeking a full-time Grossing Technician for our Dermatology and Medical Aesthetics pathology group in Portsmouth, NH. You will perform daily gross examinations, embedding, microtomy, and histochemistry, ensuring accurate identification and strict compliance with SOPs and CLIA regulations.

The role includes laboratory safety, QC responsibilities, and potential duties across related pathology support areas.

Qualifications

• Bachelor or equivalent in chemical/biological science or medical laboratory technology.
• Alternative: 60 semester hours, including 24 hours of medical lab or 24 hours science with chemistry/biology hours.
• ABHES/NAACLS-approved clinical lab training or 3 months in each high-complexity specialty.

Responsibilities

• Daily gross examination of biopsies; embedding, microtomy and histochemistry.
• Review requisitions and specimen vials for correct identification before grossing.
• Ensure compliance with SOPs, QMS, CLIA, and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain safety and waste disposal per procedures.
• Assist with equipment QC and maintenance; organize gross room.
• Troubleshoot discrepancies between requisition and tissue.
• Communicate with Dermatopathologist on grossing issues.
• Fulfill duties for Histotechnologist/Histotechnician/Pathology lab Aide as needed.
• Assist with training new employees.

Education

Bachelor of Science or associate degree in a chemical and/or biological science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution

Multi-site Dermatology Group Seeks Grossing Technician

Optima Dermatology is recruiting an experienced full-time Grossing Technician to join our growing Dermatology and Medical Aesthetics group in our Pathology Laboratory based in Portsmouth, NH.

Hours:

M-F, 1:00pm-9:30pm. Training on day shift, 8:30am-5:00pm for 6-8 weeks.

Responsibilities:

• Daily gross examination of daily biopsies received in the laboratory, embedding, microtomy and special staining (Histochemistry).
• Before grossing, reviews requisition and specimen vial to verify identification.
• Ensure operational compliance with the laboratory’s SOPs and Quality Management Systems.
• Ensure compliance with all local, federal and CLIA regulations. Maintain appropriate standards to meet all licensing and regulatory requirements and uphold company policies and integrity.
• Exercise all laboratory safety precautions/procedures and adhere to lab procedures as stated in procedure manuals.
• Participates in all equipment QC including daily measurements, equipment maintenance, hazardous and biohazardous waste management as required.
• Maintains gross room in an organized and clean matter.
• Ability to trouble shoot any discrepancies between requisition and actual tissue.
• Ability to communicate with the Dermatopathologist on any grossing issues.
• When required, fulfil the job duties for the Histotechnologist, Histotechnician and Pathology lab Aide.
• Assist with training new employees.

Qualifications:

The minimum training/experience required for high complexity personnel is as follows:

• Bachelor of Science or associate degree in a chemical and/or biological science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution

OR

• Education/training equivalent to the above that includes the following:
  • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination

AND

• Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least three months of recorded laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
