Purpose

The Pet Stylist's primary purpose is to perform expert-level professional grooming services—including bathing, drying, brushing, haircuts and styling, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and gland cleaning—while prioritizing pet safety, comfort, and well-being and delivering high customer satisfaction to pet parents.

Essential Job Functions

• Under moderate supervision, perform professional grooming services according to pet‑parent instructions and company policies.
• Operate and maintain grooming instruments (clippers, blades, shears, brushes, dryers).
• Prioritize safety and monitor pets for discomfort, illness, or injury, reporting concerns promptly.
• Evaluate individual pet needs, considering coat type, skin conditions, and temperament.
• Provide professional customer service to pet parents, addressing inquiries and recommending grooming products.
• Educate pet parents on maintenance and at‑home care to promote overall well‑being.
• Maintain a clean, sanitary grooming area; disinfect tools and equipment; perform daily and weekly cleaning tasks.
• Follow Petco grooming policies, standards, and guidelines to ensure safety and quality.
• Assist in training, supporting, and supervising entry‑level trainees when needed.

Education and Experience

• Successful completion of the Pet Stylist Apprentice program or prior professional grooming experience.
• High‑school diploma or GED preferred but not required.
• Independent judgment and problem‑solving in routine to moderately complex situations.
• Results‑driven with commitment to productivity and performance in the salon.
• Attention to detail, ensuring grooming services meet high standards.
• Passion for animals and a desire to continue a grooming career.
• Expert knowledge of dog breeds, grooming requirements, and common health issues.
• Proficiency in breed‑specific cuts, styling techniques, and grooming standards.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to handle pets of all sizes and temperaments with empathy.
• Availability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as required.

Work Environment

The majority of duties are conducted indoors in the grooming salon. The position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 lbs), and standing for extended periods. It may involve exposure to heights using a two‑step ladder and handling vacuums or other cleaning tools. A large portion of time involves direct contact with pet parents and their dogs; the remainder involves working with salon partners. The environment can be noisy and wet.
