Overall Job Summary

This position is responsible for enrolling & completing the training course Level 1 provided by Petsense, “Paragon,” in preparation for a career in grooming and/or bathing.

Paragon is a virtual distant learning program where students are guided through a 15-week training program designed to educate students on the fundamentals in bathing and grooming, while also providing the necessary basic skills in safety, pet first aid and CPR, pet handling skills, dog anatomy and dog physiology. This is achieved through a combination of hands-on practice, book work, online exams, watching videos and submitting photos of practical application for grading.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
• Work scheduled shifts and have the ability to work varied hours, days, nights, weekends and overtime as dictated by business needs.
• Support selling initiatives (TEAM):
  • Thank the Customer
  • Engage with the customer and/or pet
  • Advise products or services
  • Make it Memorable
• Learn & perform duties throughout training, including:
  • Complete Paragon Level 1 training within five weeks
  • Safe pet handling, bathing, drying, brushing, combing
  • Nail trimming, ear cleaning, preparatory hair trimming
  • Basic clipper and finishing techniques
  • Customer service, professionalism, equipment handling
  • Animal safety and well-being, health inspections
  • Sanitization protocols, record keeping, operating computer systems
  • Assist with store recovery and handling live animals
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Comfortable working with dogs and cats, demonstrating patience and compassion.
• Own tools (clippers, blades, shears) or willingness to purchase them.
• High school diploma or equivalent; ability to read, write, and count accurately.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

• Operate grooming tools and equipment effectively.
• Effective communication, compassion, attention to detail.
• Problem solving, basic computer skills, conflict resolution.

Working Conditions

• Indoor environment, moderate noise, exposure to grooming instruments, pet waste, wet conditions.
• Work shifts typically 4-8 hours, may include outdoor work on occasion.
• Maintain safety and adhere to safety guidelines.

Physical Requirements

• Move and transfer animals and equipment up to 50 pounds.
• Stand for up to 8 hours, frequent movement around the salon.
• Operate grooming instruments and store equipment safely.
• Bend, kneel, squat, and reach as needed.
• Effective communication skills, stamina, and safety awareness required.
