Job summary

Nordex SE in Chicago, IL is seeking a Grid Integration & Studies Engineer to support interconnection processes from application to commissioning. You will perform dynamic model analyses and model tune-ups to meet ISO codes and reliability standards, coordinating with Global Engineering for North America.

Requirements include a B.S. in electrical power engineering (ABET), 5+ years in energy development or planning, and proficiency with PSCAD/PSS/e/TSAT/DIgSILENT.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited B.S. in electrical power engineering.
  • PhD in Power Electronics desirable.
  • 5+ years in renewable or traditional energy development or transmission planning.
  • Experience with HV and transmission system planning and interconnection processes.
  • Experience with dynamic modeling software (PSCAD, PSS/e, TSAT, DIgSILENT).
  • Knowledge of power systems integration and ISOs interconnection requirements.
  • Familiarity with North American NERC standards and ISO codes.
  • Expertise with dynamic model analysis tools for power systems.
  • Strong communication, organization and analytical skills.
  • Willingness to travel ~20%.
  • Valid driver’s license; eligible for international travel.
  • English fluency; German/Spanish/French a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Support interconnection process from application to commissioning with dynamic model analyses.
  • Track ISO codes and reliability standards for interconnection and network studies.
  • Lead data collection and coordination with Global Engineering for project interconnection.
  • Conduct simulations using PSCAD, PSS/e, TSAT, and DIgSILENT for wind plants and BOM.
  • Serve as liaison with Global Engineering Grid Integration to support North America.
  • Communicate findings clearly in technical reports and presentations.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The role of Grid Integration & Studies Engineer directly supports the company’s mission to develop and deliver clean power plants that make 100% renewable energy a reality for the world. You will join Nordex USA as part of the Global Nordex Engineering Grid Integration group to support business in North America. The role will support the Project’s interconnection process from application to commissioning, including dynamic model analysis and model tune ups for interconnection studies and compliance with reliability standards.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
  • Track and keep up to date the respective ISOs codes and requirements as they relate to the reliability standards, project interconnection and dynamic models.
  • Assess the respective ISOs grid code compliance based on the existing product portfolio and provide guidance regarding the interface to meet the respective code and interconnection process.
  • Own and lead conversations with project stakeholders concerning project application data (tech specs, forms, dynamic models), interconnection process (planning, studies), and commissioning (plant test, commissioning reports).
  • Support project owners during the interconnection process, coordinating the internal support from Global Engineering, and tracking all required data (tech specs, forms, dynamic models, test reports) for project interconnection.
  • Conduct simulations with dynamic models (PSS/e, TSAT, PSCAD) representing wind turbine generators and plant controller, including the Balance of Plant components to meet reliability standards, ISO code, or demonstrate dynamic model quality.
  • Be the liaison with Global Engineering Grid Integration group, developing strategies to support business in North America.
WHAT YOU HAVE
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical power engineering from a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
  • PhD in Power Electronics is desirable.
  • 5+ years of experience in renewable or traditional energy development, or transmission planning.
  • Experience with HV and transmission system planning, especially project interconnection processes.
  • Experience with dynamic model analysis software (PSCAD, PSS/e, TSAT, DIgSILENT).
  • Knowledge and experience with power systems integration (onshore wind farms), project application, reliability standards and ISOs interconnection requirements.
  • Broad knowledge and familiarity with NERC reliability standards and representative ISOs codes in North America (ERCOT, NSPI, CAISO, AESO, SaskPower, Hydro Quebec).
  • Expertise in various software languages for dynamic model analysis (PSCAD, PSS/e, TSAT, DigSILENT-Power Factory) for studying power systems integration.
  • Interpersonal skills to communicate complex issues in an easy-to-understand manner.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical thinking.
  • Clear and concise technical report writing and presentation skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to obtain a passport to travel internationally.
  • Good command of English as the primary language; other languages are a plus (German, Spanish, French).
  • Ability and willingness to travel (20% typical).
  • Driving is essential; must possess a full valid driver’s license and be insurable under the company’s auto insurance policy; periodic driver’s abstract checks will be conducted.

Compensation

Pay is exempt at $130,000 - $140,000 USD salary with up to a 10% bonus. Individual compensation packages are based on various factors unique to each candidate, including skill set, experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors.
