Halbuki Linguist Cooperative, headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, is a group of linguists dedicated to offering language classes in less commonly taught languages to support language revitalization and linguistic justice, with the overall goal of building a more multilingual world.
In-person in Oakland, California.
Halbuki is seeking a Greek Language Instructor to teach adult classes in person in Oakland. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching Greek as a second language to adults, a background in language pedagogy or linguistics, and fluency in both Greek and English. Knowledge of both second language and heritage language learning methods, creativity in lesson planning, and the ability to create an engaging and welcoming classroom environment are especially important for this role.
This role will require leading approximately 2–4 group classes per week in person. Each class will be 1 to 1.5 hours long. The course is taught in 15-week terms. The position is set to begin this fall. The instructor will be responsible for creating level‑appropriate teaching materials, incorporating both language and cultural elements into lessons, and ensuring a fun, supportive, and motivating learning environment. In addition to group classes, there may be opportunities to teach private lessons depending on instructor availability.
We offer generous hourly pay for teaching hours—more than double that of most competitors—though we are not able to provide other benefits at this time. The Halbuki team is staffed with highly experienced linguists and education professionals, and this role will provide valuable career experience, as well as the opportunity to join an inspiring linguist cooperative with talented and passionate peers.
If you are passionate about sharing the Greek language and culture with the next generation, and want to be part of a cooperative dedicated to linguistic justice and multilingualism, we’d love to hear from you!
