Job summary

Minnesota Department of Transportation’s Office of Transit and Active Transportation seeks a Greater Minnesota Urban Transit Coordinator in St. Paul, MN.

The role coordinates urban transit planning with seven urban providers, leads the transit service planning program, and builds relationships with transit staff statewide to support program delivery. This hybrid/office role requires at least 50% time in the office and about 25% travel statewide to seven systems.

This position has the flexibility to work a hybrid schedule or work in the office. This position requires the employee to work a minimum of 50% time in the office. The incumbent will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor.

Our Greater Minnesota Urban Transit Coordinator position exists to coordinate a cooperative and comprehensive urban transit planning with Greater Minnesota’s seven urban transit providers. Responsibilities include the following:

  • Development and leading the transit service planning program for both urban and rural transit, providing lead worker oversight of the transit service planners, providing technical assistance in service planning to urban providers.
  • Coordinating planning efforts across transit systems, advising as a stakeholder on major transit service changes/improvement, and providing best practices for growing and maintaining their transit systems.
  • Position is key to building relationships with urban transit staff across the state and updating office leadership on programs and major projects at all urban transit providers in Greater Minnesota.
  • The Office of Transit and Active Transportation is striving to raise its level of support, cooperation, and transit planning technical assistance and this is a critical and key role in this work.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state requirements.

Minnesota Department of Transportation’s Office and Transit and Active Transportation partners with 27 rural and 7 urban transit systems throughout Greater Minnesota. This position works with the 7 urban transit systems assisting in transit service planning, operational efficiencies, oversight, and the advancement of transit for citizens of the state. Greater Minnesota’s urban transit operators are the City of La Crescent, Rochester Public Transit, City of Mankato Transit, St. Cloud Metropolitan Transit Authority, Duluth Transit Authority, Moorhead (MATBUS) and City of East Grand Forks.

Travel is required for site visits statewide to 7 transit systems (City of La Crescent, Rochester Public Transit, City of Mankato Transit, St. Cloud Metropolitan Transit Authority, Duluth Transit Authority, Moorhead (MATBUS) and City of East Grand Forks). 25% travel.

Here are the Minimum Qualifications:

Three years of advanced professional transportation planning experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience with transit service planning improvements/redesign
  • Experience with transit operations, including budgets, performance metrics, and transit planning best practices
  • Experience with planning studies and complex planning processes in urban environments
  • Experience with planning principles, methods, and techniques sufficient to develop local, regional, or metropolitan planning organization (MPO) plans.
  • Experience with demographic trends, statistics, and ability to manipulate spreadsheets to analyze and display current conditions, trends, and build out potential scenarios.

A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Planning, Geography, Urban Studies, Sociology, Political Science substitutes for six months of advanced professional experience.
