Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of grant accounting experience, preferably with federal, state, and local grants.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and grant compliance requirements.
  • Experience with month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel, and accounting software.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the financial accounting and reporting for all federal, state, local, and private grants, ensuring compliance with grant agreements, GAAP, and Uniform Guidance as applicable.
  • Prepare grant reimbursement requests, PMS drawdowns, FFRs, and other required financial reports; monitor expenditures, budgets, receivables, and deferred revenue.
  • Support the Foundation by maintaining accurate financial records, preparing journal entries and reconciliations, and assisting with reporting.
  • Prepare grant- and foundation-related journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules.
  • Coordinate and lead monthly grant review meetings with program leadership to review activity, performance, compliance, and funding utilization.
  • Assist the accounting dept with month-end close, year-end close, budget prep, audit support, and other finance projects.

Summary/objective

The Grant Accountant is responsible for the financial management, accounting, and reporting of the organization's federal, state, local, and private grant awards. This position ensures compliance with grant regulations, organizational policies, and accounting standards by maintaining accurate financial records, preparing grant financial reports, monitoring grant expenditures, and supporting grant budgeting and reimbursement activities. The Grant Accountant also supports the accounting functions of the Foundation, assists with month-end and year-end closing processes, audit preparation, and financial reporting, and works collaboratively with program leadership to ensure effective stewardship of organization and foundation funds.

  • Grant Management: Knowledge of federal, state, and local grant accounting principles, grant compliance requirements, and financial reporting.

  • Technology: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience using accounting and financial management systems.
Work environment

This position operates primarily in a professional office environment. The employee routinely uses standard office equipment, including computers, telephones, printers, copiers, scanners, and other office technology. The position requires frequent interaction with employees, management, auditors, grantors, and external stakeholders.

The employee is regularly required to communicate verbally and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods while performing computer-based work. The employee may occasionally be required to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift or move items weighing up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, and other standard office equipment is required.

Position type and expected hours of work

This is a full-time, exempt position. The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position is based in the Teays Valley office and requires regular on-site attendance. Remote or hybrid work arrangements are not available for this position. Additional hours may be required periodically to meet month-end and year-end closing deadlines, audit requirements, grant reporting deadlines, or other business needs.

Occasional local travel to organizational sites and other business-related locations may be required to support grant and accounting activities. Employees who use their personal vehicle for authorized business travel will be reimbursed for mileage in accordance with the organization's mileage reimbursement policy.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage the financial accounting and reporting for all federal, state, local, and private grants, ensuring compliance with grant agreements, organizational policies, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and Uniform Guidance, as applicable.
  • Prepare grant reimbursement requests, Payment Management System (PMS) drawdowns, Federal Financial Reports (FFRs), and other required financial reports, including report submission in the Electronic Handbook (EHB); monitor grant expenditures, budgets, receivables, and deferred revenue to ensure compliance with funding requirements.
  • Support the accounting functions of the Foundation by maintaining accurate financial records, preparing journal entries and account reconciliations, monitoring restricted funds, and assisting with financial reporting.
  • Prepare grant- and foundation-related journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules
  • Coordinate and lead monthly grant review meetings with program leadership to review grant financial activity, budget performance, compliance requirements, reporting deadlines, and funding utilization.
  • Assist the accounting department with month-end close, year-end close, budget preparation, audit support, and other accounting and finance projects as assigned.
