Job summary

HBK Engineering, LLC is seeking aGraduate Engineer to design electrical, civil, and structural systems for overhead and subsurface utility projects. You will own the design lifecycle from initiation through construction closeout and coordinate with clients on risk management.

The role offers growth in a collaborative team with responsibilities expanding beyond entry level, including increased client communication and project risk oversight. Office locations include Chicago and Oak Brook, IL.

Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering with emphasis on civil/structural/geotechnical engineering.
  • 0–3 years’ experience in structural and/or geotechnical engineering.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of AISC, ASCE, and IBC design codes.
  • Proficiency in Mathcad and/or RISA.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
  • M.S. Degree in Civil/Structural engineering preferred.
  • EIT Certification preferred.
  • Structural design experience a plus.

About this Role

A Graduate Engineer at HBK Engineering is a position for engineering professionals with foundational experience in the field. This role involves designing engineering systems for overhead and subsurface utility projects while developing creative and unique solutions to address complex electrical, structural, civil, and construction-related challenges. The position encompasses ownership of all phases of the design lifecycle from initiation through construction completion and project closeout, with increased responsibilities in client communication and project risk management compared to entry-level positions. Office location: Chicago and Oak Brook, IL



What You'll Do

Within the HBK Organization, the Graduate Structural Engineer will perform work on challenging assignments that include investigating, trouble-shooting, and solving a wide variety of engineering and construction related issues.


Our Structural Team’s service offerings include but are not limited to:



  • Design of permanent and temporary structures such as poles, manholes, vaults, and earth retention systems.

  • Foundation work includes slab-on-grade, shallow foundation, deep foundations, helical pile design, pole foundations, solar equipment foundations, equipment pad design, structural support of electric vehicle charging projects, riser foundations, concrete pedestals, pipe protection slabs.

  • Design of temporary and permanent utility supports.

  • Design of retaining walls.

  • Onsite evaluations: including transmission towers, manholes, vaults and tunnels.

Description:



  • Apply engineering theories, techniques and analysis to structural and geotechnical engineering designs.

  • Perform calculations and prepare sketches and/or AutoCAD drawings for design operations.

  • Work on new and existing wood, masonry, steel, and concrete structures.

  • Work on foundations, deep shaft and trench excavations as well as temporary and permanent earth retention systems/structures.

  • Assist drafters in developing designs using drafting tools or computer-assisted design (CAD) or drafting equipment and software.

  • Coordinate design activities to ensure installation and operations will comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.

  • Prepare technical memos, reports, construction specifications, and other written documentation summarizing engineering analyses and/or conclusions.

  • Read and interpret drawings, calculations, schematics, field observations and reports.

  • Conduct structural investigations, field inspections, and engineering analysis.

  • Perform conceptual and value engineering with emphasis on constructability issues.



What You'll Bring

Required Qualifications:



  • B.S. Degree in CivilEngineering with an emphasis oncivil / structural / geotechnical engineering required.

  • 0-3 years’ experience in structural and/or geotechnical engineering required.


Essential skills:



  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.

  • Knowledge of industry design codes including AISC, ASCE, and IBC required.

  • Proficiency in Mathcad and/or RISA

  • Fundamental knowledge of principles of structural engineering

  • Ability to travel as needed


Valued skills and experiences:



  • M.S. Degree inCivil/Structural engineering preferred

  • EIT Certification

  • Structural design experience

  • Fundamental knowledge of temporary construction systems,geotechnical engineering, soil and rock mechanics, earthquake engineering, and groundwater hydrology

  • Prior internship experience is a plus

  • Construction experience is a plus

  • Surveying experience is a plus

Compensation Range

The anticipated compensation for this position is USD $66,000.00/Yr. - USD $72,000.00/Yr. depending on experience and qualifications.
