Job summary

Cumberland City Council is seeking a Graduate Environmental Health Officer to join the Environmental Health Unit at Auburn, NSW. This 12-month full-time role supports the Coordinator Environmental Health and provides exposure to multiple areas of environmental health.

The position offers a 70-hour fortnight schedule and access to the nine-day fortnight ADO arrangement. Salary is governed by the NSW Local Government (State) Award, with Grade 8 range of $1,431.67 to $1,753.80 per week plus 12%

Qualifications

  • Recently completed a relevant tertiary qualification in environmental health or equivalent.
  • General Construction Induction Card (White Card) (or willing to obtain)
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound organisational and time management skills.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Health legislation including Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, Food Act 2003 and Public Health Act 2010.
  • Current Class C drivers licence (unrestricted).

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Coordinator Environmental Health and other members of the Environmental Health Unit to meet Legislative, Management Plan and Budgetary requirements.
  • Gain high level experience in multiple areas of environmental health.
  • Support the organisation in maintaining safety and compliance for residents and businesses within the Cumberland Council area.

Located 20km west of Sydney on Dharug country, with a population of over 250,000 residents, Cumberland City Council is the fourth most populous Local Government Area in Greater Sydney. ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Environmental and Development Services team monitor public health related businesses who provide food and beauty services to the community, along with places of public access such as public swimming pools, making sure they are safe for the Cumberland Council residents. This team is also responsible for regulating compliance throughout the LGA ensuring that amenity and general safety is achieved, monitoring building compliance and fire safety. All of these services allow residents and visitors to the area to enjoy and feel safe within our Council area.

This role will assist the Coordinator Environmental Health and other members of the Environmental Health Unit and Council to ensure that the organisation meets all its Legislative, Management Plan and Budgetary requirements. The Graduate Environmental Health Officer is also responsible for maintaining Cumberland City Council (the organisation and the community) at the forefront of Environmental Health.

This role provides a unique opportunity to gain high level experience in multiple areas of environmental health that will provide invaluable experience in your environmental health career.

The successful applicant will require:

  • Recently completed a relevant tertiary qualification in environmental health or equivalent.
  • General Construction Induction Card (White Card) (or willing to obtain)

  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • General knowledge of the relevant Environmental Health legislation including Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, Food Act 2003 (and Food Safety Standards), Public Health Act 2010.
  • Current Class C drivers licence (unrestricted).

About this role:

  • Term contract (12 months), full-time position
  • 70 hour fortnight
  • Access to Council's 9 day fortnight Accrued Day Off (ADO) arrangement
  • Located at Council's Auburn office, with occasional travel required across Council worksites, and may be required to work across any of Council’s work locations

Salary information: The salary and conditions of employment are in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award.

  • Grade 8 of the Cumberland Salary Structure with a salary range of $1,431.67 to $1,753.80 per week, plus 12% superannuation
  • The commencing salary will be negotiated, taking into consideration the successful applicant's qualifications, skills and experience related to the role
