Job summary

Join MKS Instruments, Inc. as an Applications Engineering Intern in Beaverton, OR, partnering with Emerging Applications and Product Engineering to shape future laser machining systems.

You will perform DOE studies, run metrology analyses with optical and scanning tools, and develop guidance for cross-site teams. The role emphasizes hands-on optics work, data analysis, and documentation, with minimal travel and relocation support if needed.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a Master’s or PhD degree program at the University of Oregon.
• Knowledge of laser-material interactions from optics/materials science; experience with optics & scanning subsystems and/or UV/CO2 lasers is a plus.
• Comfortable hands-on use of optics and opto-mechanics components is a plus.
• Self-motivated with cross-functional problem solving and communication.
• Experience with Python, Matlab, or similar is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Utilize design-of-experiments (DOE) to prepare and perform applications work.
• Perform broad metrology and analysis techniques including optical and confocal microscopy, FIB-SEM, and AOI tools.
• Data analysis using statistical and image analysis software.
• Develop applications guides and best-known-method documentation for communication between teams and sites.
• Maintain and troubleshoot tools used throughout the course of your job.
