Posting Title

Graduate (3–12 month) Intern – Artificial Intelligence for Power System Operations (Location: Golden, CO)

Overview

The Grid Automation and Controls group at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) conducts high‑impact projects to modernize power systems by developing AI/ML solutions that improve reliability, resilience, and security.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to advance research projects.
  • Develop innovative AI/LLM solutions addressing emerging power system needs.
  • Contribute to and/or lead the writing of research papers.
  • Conduct research work independently.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Undergraduate: Full‑time bachelor’s student or recent graduate within 12 months.
  • Graduate: Full‑time master’s student or recent master’s graduate within 12 months; PhD candidate eligible.
  • Applicants must upload official or unofficial transcripts and may be required to provide a letter of recommendation.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Completed an undergraduate degree and either enrolled in or recently graduated from a master’s in computer science, data science, electrical engineering or related fields, or a PhD program.
  • Experience with natural language learning, large language models, foundation models, or transformer models.
  • Strong knowledge of neural networks, state‑of‑the‑art learning algorithms, and their application to complex systems.
  • Strong Python programming skills and proficiency in other comparable languages.
  • Self‑motivated and passionate about learning new techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with reinforcement learning, graph neural networks, or other ML/AI techniques.
  • Experience using high‑performance computing and Linux systems.
  • Experience with JavaScript, SQL, MongoDB, and developing interactive web‑based dashboards and tools.
  • Familiarity with power systems and basics of power flow.
