Job summary

ZIP-O-LOG MILLS, INC. is seeking a Grader to inspect and grade lumber, ensuring it meets quality standards and customer specs.

You will identify grades, measure dimensions, and communicate quality concerns to production teams. In this role you will work safely in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, following all safety policies and procedures, including LOTO, while maintaining a clean and organized workspace and supporting production as needed.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of lumber grading principles.
  • Ability to identify lumber grades and defects.
  • Strong attention to detail and decision-making.
  • Effective communication with supervisors and coworkers.

Responsibilities

  • Visually inspect lumber pieces to determine the correct grade.
  • Measure lumber with tape measures and gauges to verify dimensions.
  • Mark lumber with the appropriate grade designation.
  • Continuously monitor lumber sizes and product quality during production.
  • Identify defects, quality concerns, or production issues and notify the Production Supervisor.
  • Pull and sort designated grades onto lay-up carts according to production requirements.
  • Safely operate a skill saw and other hand tools as required.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Follow all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures applicable to assigned duties.
  • Immediately report equipment malfunctions or machinery defects.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, or potential hazards.
  • Perform housekeeping and minor maintenance during downtime.
  • Assist in other production areas as assigned to support operational needs.

Summary

The Grader is responsible for inspecting, measuring, grading, and marking lumber products to ensure they meet company quality standards and customer specifications. This position plays a critical role in maintaining product quality by accurately identifying lumber grades and communicating quality concerns. The Grader is expected to work safely, efficiently, and collaboratively while following all company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Visually inspect each piece of lumber on all four sides to determine the proper grade according to company and industry standards.
  • Measure lumber using tape measures, size gauges, and other measuring devices to verify proper dimensions and specifications.
  • Accurately mark each piece of lumber with the appropriate grade designation.
  • Continuously monitor lumber sizes and product quality throughout production.
  • Identify defects, quality concerns, or production issues and immediately notify the Production Supervisor.
  • Pull and sort designated grades onto lay-up carts according to production requirements.
  • Safely operate a skill saw and other hand tools as required.
  • Maintain constant awareness of product flow and surrounding work activities.
  • Follow all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures applicable to assigned duties.
  • Immediately report equipment malfunctions or machinery defects.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, or potential hazards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Perform housekeeping, cleanup, and minor maintenance during production downtime.
  • Assist in other production areas as assigned to support operational needs.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with company safety policies and quality standards.
