Job summary

Norfolk Public School District is seeking a Part-Time Grade 5 Science Tutor in Norfolk, VA. The tutor will provide supplemental daily instruction in small groups, monitor progress, and assist teachers with instruction and assessment preparation.

The role requires a Virginia teaching license or the ability to obtain one, a high school diploma, and completion of Title IX, Mandated Reporting, and Suicide Prevention trainings. Hours are 5 per day, with compensation at $25-$30 per hour.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Active Virginia Teaching License: $30/Hour

No Active Teaching License: $25/Hour

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess and maintain the certification requirements as established by the Virginia Department of Education (Title IX Training, Mandated Reporting Training and Suicide Prevention Training)
  • Must possess a high school diploma

Nature of Position

The Science Tutor will provide supplemental daily instruction to assist students in grade 5, in small groups who are identified as needing additional support in science. These instructors perform activities like monitoring student progress, assisting students to improve science skills, assisting teachers with small group instruction, helping with conceptual understanding, and preparing students for assessments.

Examples of Duties

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Provides science instruction and support to students in grade 5 in collaboration with classroom teachers
  • Teaches foundational science concepts that demonstrate the integration of scientific and engineering practices to small groups of students
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials that meet the needs of the assigned group utilizing district provided resources
  • Evaluates students to measure skill progression and determine improvement areas.
  • Participates in monthly professional development and training focusing on science instruction and best practices
  • Collaborates with the science teacher specialist in planning for the instructional needs of the students
  • Monitors and documents academic progress of the assigned students
  • Maintain appropriate records
  • Communicates with classroom teacher to discuss student progress and provide feedback
  • Follow an instructional schedule developed by school personnel working 5 hours a day
  • Work involves exposure to normal everyday hazards encountered in a school
  • Work is performed in a classroom and involves no unusual demands

Knowledge, Skill, & Ability

  • In-depth knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching
  • Ability to interact effectively with students, staff, administrators, parents, and community.

Salary: $25 to $30 Per Hour
