Job summary

City of Victoria TX is seeking an entry-level Maintenance Worker I to perform lawn, landscape, ball field, and basic construction-related maintenance for parks, grounds, facilities and buildings. Work is done under supervision by a Crew Leader or Manager.

Candidates should be able to lift up to 75 pounds, operate basic tools, and work varied hours including weekends and holidays. The City offers full benefits and values safety and teamwork in a busy municipal setting.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8th grade education required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license with driving record that meets City guidelines.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • General knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with park maintenance work.
  • Ability to work alone or in a group effectively and be willing to perform all tasks necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Support and embrace the mission and Core Values of the Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Maintains grassy areas, shrubs, trees, plants and other landscape areas using ground maintenance equipment.
  • Uses hand and power tools for construction, repair and maintenance of parks facilities.
  • Performs ball field maintenance including field preparation, irrigation and chemical applications.
  • Maintains and performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Performs other duties including litter control and janitorial tasks.
  • Works safely and in compliance with City rules and department safety standards.
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Occasionally works weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Provides customer service and works well with others.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Maintenance Worker I will perform entry level maintenance duties related to the lawn/landscape, ball field or construction trades in the maintenance and repair of parks, grounds, facilities and buildings. Work is performed under direct supervision of a Crew Leader or Manager.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities
  • Support and embrace the mission and Core Values of the Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Performs general maintenance of grassy areas, shrubs, trees, plants and other associated landscape areas by using ground maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Performs work with various hand and power tools used in the construction, repair and maintenance of parks facilities such as but not limited to drills, hammers, wrenches and tape measures.
  • Performs entry level ball field maintenance such as but not limited to field preparation, irrigation and chemical applications.
  • Maintains and performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Performs all other job related duties as assigned or as become apparent, including but not limited to litter control and janitorial duties.
  • Performs duties in a safe and orderly manner, complying with all City and department safety rules.
  • Regular attendance at work and arrives on time.
  • Ability to work hours other than 8am - 5pm, including weekends and holidays.
  • Provides customer service and expected to work well with others.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Ability to drive a vehicle to and from various worksites. Employee will work in seasonal temperatures. Employee will bend, kneel, twist, climb, squat and stoop while performing duties. Employee will frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 75 pounds. Ability to push/pull a maximum weight of 150 pounds. Employee will be exposed to dirt, dust, water, mud, noises, fumes and odors. Employee may also be exposed to potential mechanical, chemical, electrical, fire and traffic hazards while operating maintenance equipment. Ability to handle small objects and tools.

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods as required by work assignments.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • General knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with park maintenance work.
  • Ability to work alone or in a group effectively and be willing to perform all tasks necessary.
